Hello all. I need some help identifying the amount of lift on my CJ5 . The shackles are 6.5 inches from end to end on both the front and rear. Front and rear springs are both 4 leaf. Jeep sits on 35's with plenty of wheel well clearance. There is no body lift.

Attached are some pics if it helps any...

If there's anything else I can measure please let me know.

Looking at installing a 350 with the existing T-176 and a Novak adapter. Driveline angle with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l looks pretty good, but I need to know if it would be better to lower the jeep an inch or two not only for the swap, but for safety too.

I have no idea on the springs, but getting rid of thoes long shackles would sure make it drive better.

Have yet to drive it, but I'll take your word for it :)

I'm thinking it might be a 4" spring lift with a 2" shackle lift. Would there be any problem keeping the springs but reducing the shackles to say, a 1" lift? Any benefit from that other than ride quality?

Stock shackle center to center distance is approximately 3", subtract 3" from your measurement. Divide by 2. That's your shackle lift.

I'd go with 4" spring lift. If it rides like a tank (rough) then it's definately a 4". :D

I think 73CJ answered the question about the shackle lift.

As for the springs, 4 inches may be right but to check it sight along the spring ends to see how much curvature there is.

Thanks Busa - I tried your method and determined the springs provide 4" of lift. I'll likely keep them and just get some shorter shackles. Need to replace the bushings anyway...

Good thinking :chug:

new rule of thumb distance from top of axle to bottom of stock bump stop minus 1" is the spring lift

just slightly easier than running straight edge across top of spring.:D
