L6 258 AMC 4.2
When I park the '85 CJ7 in the garage, I'm getting a really strong fuel smell. Brand new S&J engine (L6 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ), HEI Distributor (Davis), brand new Webber Carbo. She's running great, maybe Idling just a touch high. Any thoughts on the best method to troubleshoot this? Havent seen any fuel leaks etc. Any ideas would help out.

One other thing. Also just put a new mechanical Precision Fuel Pump 7PSI

I was getting strong smell from my evap canister due to exhaust being WAY TOO CLOSE to the fuel tank. Fuel was was hot before it ever went to the engine, so my tank was venting, lots of venting, thru the canister.

Thanks for the note. My fuel smell is mostly when it hasn't even really been running. Like even after 2 days - garage is filled with fuel odor.

I'm learning on this tread! My '71 CJ5 gives off a strong fuel smell too after sitting in the garage for a day or so. I replaced the fuel cap because the old one was fitting loose, but that only helped perhaps a little.

Assuming it is an exhausted evaporative canister, how is that dealt with? I suspect finding a replacement would be near impossible? Can they be recharged with new charcoal media?

:ww:

Look for broken fittings on your evap cannister.
Make sure all fuel and vent lines connections are 'tite'.
Make sure the gas tank cap isn't leaking/venting when it shouldn't.
Park it outside till fixed.......
Here's what we are talk'n about.

Good luck,

I used aquarium charcoal when I redid mine.

If you do a search this topic has come up before. There are canisters out there that you can get new that are very close to what you need.

I did the above canister swap. I'm not sure that drilling out the holes is the right thing to do. Some day when I can afford it I'm going to do some testing with a vacuum pump to see if the vacuum opens the lines as it should and all that. I still get a big fuel smell when I'm driving and let off the gas.

:)

Check your carburetor float level.............and or the needle & seats ...7 PSI may be to much pressure for your carburetor..........no need for that being at 7 PSI.........if it doesn't have a regulator at the fuel pump or one in line put one in......

Are you running the OEM type fuel filter, the one that has a second(smaller)return fuel line on the side that feeds the carb?
If YES-Make SURE that return line is at the 12 0'clock position.
Another place to consider-The "O" ring seal on your gas tank sending unit.
LG

Along those lines. On the sending unit there is a fuel draw tube frequently the tube looses the solder joint that keeps it attached to the top of the unit. If you can turn the fuel line the seal is broken. If that is the case and if your sending unit works, I'd repair the joint and reuse it. It's not as easy as you'd think it should be to find a sending unit that talks well with a CJ's gas gauge.

Ain't that the truth!!! Brand new 15 gal tank and sending unit, full tank gives me right at 3/4 on the gauge [emoji848]

Try this-Run a dedicated ground wire from your dash panel, directly to the NEG(-)post of your battery.
LG

Lumpy you talking about for an inaccurate reading on the gauge for the ground wire?

Might want to put eyes on the roll over valve. My fuel smell was from rotted vent lines combined with a crack in the plastic valve.

Yes-Low fuel reading when tank is full and higher engine temp than normal are classic indicators of bad dash panel GND with factory gauges.
Common issue with these old Jeeps.
