Hello,,

First post here, new member, but been a reader for a long time. I have a few questions for the group. I have a 84 CJ7 with 31” tires. Will try to make a long story short ..
2 years ago I hired a local mechanic shop to pull and then install a stock AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l that I had rebuilt at a machine shop out of town. and install a new clutch while it was apart.(even though the clutch was working fine) While he was in there he noticed the ring gear was bad on the flywheel. So instead of buying a new ring gear and resurfaceing the old flywheel, he bought a new flywheel at Auto Zone for $19.00. When I picked the Jeep up he told me the story of the “great deal” on a nineteen dollar flywheel. I then went straight to Auto Zone to try to get it back but it was already sent on. It worked good for about 6 months but now when now you let out on the clutch it shakes very bad . My questions would be

My Wife bought me a new Flywheel from 4-wheel drive hardware for Christmas. Will the Crown flywheel hold up? Anyone have good luck with Crown parts? I`m not a hardcore off roader, light trail & a little mud

The clutch now has 8,000 miles on it and it came from NAPA . Would it be alright to change the flywheel and put the old clutch back in or do you think the warped flywheel damaged the clutch. Hate to change this if not needing to due to $$$ .But will if needed

Thanks in advance for any help...Danny

Ever hear the old saying you get what you pay for? Maybe the flywheel had been sitting around and they were just happy make it go away. Crown stuff is generally ok; some better than others but sometimes it is all you can get for an older jeep.

Shaking as you let out the clutch is generally more clutch related than flywheel although it can be the flywheel. You won’t know for sure until you take it apart. As Barry2 said double check to make sure the pressure plate is bolted down properly as that could be it. The usual culprit is the friction plate (disk) being warped or broken but again not necessarily so. Sounds like it’s time to learn how to drop the tranny.

It is a shame that you are having problems so soon, removing and installing the Transmission is possible by your self not the most fun thing to do but possible. There are several things that could cause your vibrations including but not exclusive to the flywheel, the flywheel could be warped from excessive clutch slippage, loose bolts on the clutch cover, missing material from the disk, oil contamination from the Transmission or engine, warped disk, worn out pilot bearing are some of the ones I can think of. Like said above check for loose bolts first after that the tranny needs to come out

Thanks Guys for the quick response , Yes I have checked all the bolts and replaced the Transmission . mount. I may have jumped to gun,, but the guilty party just looked like the $19.00 flywheel , but I will be looking at all the other stuff mention above getting to the flywheel . Can you see the warped f/w with a straight edge ?

Thanks again ,,Danny
