I am considering a PS upgrade. My rig is a 79 CJ5 , with original manual steering set up. Im running the original AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l inline 6 with the 3 speed. Im needing a parts list so it gets done right.

Ok here we go and I hope I dont miss anything. :)

a. power steering pump and resevoir

b. power steering steering box.

c. 2 lines pressure and return.

d. power steering steering coupler

e. power steering pitman arm

f. mounting brackets for pump / resevoir

Im not sure how many grooves are on your fan pulley. You need 2. I have 2 Cjs here right now 1 manual and one power. If you need any pics just ask. Then wait. :) Seriously though I'll get them for you as soon as I can.

Pete

Thanks alot man. Thats a big help. Im new to the CJ world. This is my first one. I love it so Far. If you could send some shots of the power steering setup that would be awesome.

new belts, maybe new pullies
misc bolts and washers and nuts
pitman arm could be affected
drag link
will you need to do linkage in the steeringcolumn work?
just reminding u\you to save money for all of these, they could need to be changed

Very rainy here today but its early in the morning. If its dry by the time I get home from work I'll grab a few shots. If not definitely tomorrow.

Got a break in the rain here for ya. This first pick is of the pump and resevoir itself. You can also see both the return and pressure lines leading down to the steering box in this pic. Picture is taken from the driverside fender.

This pic is the coupling that attaches your steering box to the shaft that leads to your steering column. Pic is taken from the underside of the Jeep on the drivers side.

This pic shows you the brackets that mount the pump and resevoir.

We have a member on here whos screenname is Coldwater. He converted to power steering and Im sure he can help with any questions you may have. If you want more pics of my dirty Jeep just ask. :)

I converted my 78 and I bought a package from www.powersteeringpros.com and it covered most of the main items at a reasonable cost, new P. steering box, rebuilt pump and new hoses, you still need a new intermidiate steering shaft-the spline is larger on the P.steering box, new pitman arm -dif. spline, and the tricky part if not a welder/fabricator type is the brackets to mount the pump and of course you need a belt.
The other way to go on the pump mount is find a used one on Ebay or?
Personally I would stay with new or rebuilt steering box and pump just to avoid issues with tired or worn out used units.

My Dad and I just got a 79 CJ5 with the same setup and want to get rid of the ross manual and go to PS. There is a lot of play in the existing steering and it doesn't seem to make sense to throw good money after bad to fix the existing steering. We'd like to save some money by cannibalizing cars at the pick a part to get the primary components like the ps steering box and pump. Can someone tell us which older GM, AMC or Jeep models will work for getting bolt on steering box, ps pump and maybe even a tilt steering column in the process! (it seems that I've seen a few people refer to getting the major components from 70s and 80s GM vehicles but no-one giving any specific models). Any help will be great!! Next step will be asking your opinions on doing a CJ to YJ spring conversion to replace the worn out original springs. :) Thanks in advance of your help!

Thanks CJ. I had gone through that article and found some good info but a lot of the links are expired and it doesn't list make model for the steering gear box. Best I could tell looking around, a non-complete conversion kit is around $ 600 so trying to save a little. :).

I am upgrading to power steering in my CJ5 and was wondering if anyone had a power steering bracket assy. for a saginaw pump that they might want to sell that would fit a amc 360?
