Hi,

We have a 1975 CJ5 with somewhat larger tires on it. My wife has trouble getting into it since it is a rather large step-up.

Does anyone have experience with these nerf bars? nerf bars

Are there better choices out there? There does not seem to be a lot options for CJs of this era.

Tomstromie, I vote nerf bars with a step. Here's what came on this one when I bought it, and have been no trouble to maintain. It is exactly like the stirrup on a saddle, except the Jeep won't shy out from under you.

My wife uses a fold down step, but steps can come in all shapes and sizes as you stated. I would think a step attached to a rocker panel guard would work good. The frame of the CJ might get bent with one of those steps attached to it when you get close to the rocks.

All depends on the type of 4 wheeling you do. If you are a rough hard core 4 wheeler, you will want more prtection than step. If this is just a fun 4 wheeler, what you showed will work. I suggest for the latter that the step be a part of the tube. If you only realky need a step, one of these may be the ticket, Bully Aluminum Side Steps . Just keep in mind that all become very slick when ice, snow, or mud are introduced needing careful precaution when used. Have fun, Rod

I am a lot older than some, so nerf alone does not work. I have them and plan to weld some lower steps to help. if I can rig a flipup step that will be better

I have a set from Rugged Ridge. They absolutely did not fit my '75. The attaching points were exactly where the body mounting points were on the frame. So, rather than send them back I modified them to fit. It took some cutting and welding and drilling and using the GREAT self tapping screws that came with the kit. Now they are great.

If I were you, I didn't consider these until I already had the Nerf bars, I'd get a set of rock sliders with the pipe sticking out the sides for a step. They are tough and practical. Also if asked you can deny they are for a step, they protect your jeep when in big rock country.

I ended up purchasing and installing the nerf bars from Rugged Ridge. And yes, they're mounted more forward than I would have liked due to the mounting points of the body. But it's not that bad.

I also painted the bars with truck bed liner before installing them. That gave them more of a matte black finish with a textured surface hopefully will be more durable than the stock paint on them
