New CJ5 owner

Hello, I recently became a CJ5 owner. Q: how can I tell what front and rear diff are in my jeep. Prior owner didn't know. He bought the jeep with many Modifications done. Motor switched from a AMC 304 to a new 360.

The rear end seems to make a rachet sound when I turn corners and was wondering how I could tell what type of rear end is in it.

Need pictures of the front and rear diff covers to help you.

The ratchet sound could be a locker - you would need to pull the cover and snap a picture for us to be sure.

If it is ratcheting only in the corners, I would sat lockers. If you jack the rear end up, both tires should turn in the same direction. You also won't be able to spin one without spinning the other.

Thanks for the info. from this page I could tell the 78 CJ5 has rear AMC 20and front - Dana 30 diffs. Thanks for the help!
