Vehicle(s)
1970 CJ5, V6, 3spd, power steering, headers, electric fans, upgraded larger radiator, '78 grill, disc brakes (front only), swing pedals, hyd clutch, extended front shock mounts, upgraded front driveline w larger u-joints, warn OD, D30 front diff, lockers, 2100 carb, working on a '74 tub replacement, '78 windshield frame with '78+ Acme hardtop
I have searched everywhere and found nothing. I WANT to extend the shock travel in the REAR but have found no examples. Front is easy but what do you do in the rear? Pics and photos greatly needed. I assume you have to cut the tub to make room for the extended mount on the top. Help, info please! Jeep is a '70 CJ5 . OR is it even worth the work?

How much lift do you have/ are you planning?

Work on your profile, "lots of mods" does not tell us a lot.:D

I know what you mean. I thought images would be easier to find than they have proven to be. You usually see the top of the shock and shock mounts come up through the rear floor. I'll keep looking but this Tj chassis has kind of what I mean. Hit the yellow bar to make the pic full size and scroll down.

And dont pick on my fellow Moderators. :D You dont have to put all your mods in there (I doubt theres enough space :D) but a basic platform would be nice.

Petescj, my profile has had most of my mods for a long time. Why they do not come up on the side like yours is the question. Take a look a my profile and see if you can see my mods. Is there something else I am suppose to do to have them come up in my signature on the side of my posts?:chug:

You are right I can go into your profile and see your mods they just don't show up next to your posts.

I knew you had plenty of mods. Maybe from past threads or when I read your profile. I know there are 2 sections of your profile. The first is listed under "vehicles". Thats where you have the "70 CJ5 with lots of mods". Just take out the lots of mods and be a little more descriptive. Thats what will show up under your screen name. Then theres a section that says Mods. Its an additional spot for stuff that wont fit. Its not a perfect system but I hope this helps. :chug:

Looks great , thank you. Ive tried searching around a little more today and cant seem to find anything really useful for the rear shocks. Like you said plenty out there on the front but thats no help. Most everything that comes up for the rear is 4 link with coilovers. I know Ive seen the leaf spring extended shock mount through the floor of the tub set up , just cnat find an example. The one place I think might have something on it is Pirate4x4.com but I dont go over there much at all anymore. Did you do a search over there?

Thanks for searching Petescj, same as I found. I think I am going to take a stab at cutting the tub. Will just place thu a hole in the floor of the old tub with a rubber boot and will cut & reframe a shock housing in the new tub.

Thanks again,

Maybe a hole saw and then some fuel line split and used as protection from the cut sheetmetal? I wish I had the talent to draw up what I see on a computer. Maybe a Transmission or Transfer Case shifter boot top and bottom to keep the elements out? Or maybe you just dont drive it during "Monsoon Season". :D

Im interested what you come up with.

Excelant job on the profile.:punk:

Now back to the original question, How much lift do yuou have?

Center to center measurment on the shock mount studs, setting static on the ground, with shock off and lifted at the bumper so it is fully extended and how far from the top of the axle to the bump stop/ bottom of frame when you take the first measurment? This will tell how much stroke you need and how far above and below static position you need it. putting higher shock towers could result in the stroke being available in places you can't use it because the spring is not going to compress that much. you need a bit of stroke up top to keep from bottoming out but the stock suspension only had 1" of travel upward. you can pretty well figure the lift number plus 1 1/2" is all the upward travel you can possibly need and that only if you really hammer it.
I understand you are not going to use the stock shock size but do you want to need $200 remote resivoir Blisteens if you don't really need them?

I went through all this when I found that I had bottomed my shocks out for lack of travel, bent the bottom mount studs. All this using the "correct " shock that Skyjacker sent with the lift kit. further investigation showed that the shocks were the least expencive shock they could have put in the kit. Just changing the shocks to the next size and the 2nd next size ( they were not even matched to be the wrong ones front and back) and I have all the travel I can use, which is not as much as you may fiirst think.

I would think you have two or three inches for tower extensions before the body gets in the way and needs to be cut.

Another option for those with wider then stock axles or proper back spacing is to mount a ford shock tower or tube mount on the outside frame rail. This is what I plan to do with my current build. I cut down a rear 60 on both sides and run 5" of backspacing to suck in the tires and I still have room to mount the tower on the outside frame rail. I chose to leave the bed as is for storage.
