I bought a totally rusted '64 recently and am rebuilding the floors at this point. Front floor was totally replaced along with saving the storage ( more welding ). Now I'm rebuilding the rear floor ( nothing was there, even the crossmember was rusted through ). I will be spraying it inside and out with Desert Tan bedliner.

Here is the back and what I am working on now. Rear crossmember was paper thin in the middle. I could have more easily replaced the entire piece, but $130 bucks or so I didn't want to spend.

So I cut the center section out You can see how rusty this CJ was/is.
I couldn't find channel the same size as the stock member, so I bought angle iron, 1/8 thick. This is about .020 thicker than stock, but it will work fine. I cut and tacked in the top half first.

Then tacked in the lower half to make it a channel.

Once it is fully welded and ground, you will not be able to tell and it will be actually stronger than stock. I had to cut out the valance and tailgate surround for access as well as fixing/repairing rust in those pieces.

POs had 29 gauge metal pop riveted all over this Jeep. The rear crossmember was done that way as well :) You see the filler was so thick it covered the side tailgate surrounds. I'll be lightening up this Jeep a bit with removal of filler a fixing it properly.

I have a floor panel made and ready to go when I finally have something to attach it to :) I need to repair the wheelhouses too. I first will do continuous welds on the rear crossmember and finish it. I need more gas for the welder.

Thanks . . this is a quickie on frame restoration. Its going to be a "farm Jeep " of sorts on my property down south. So creating some parts rather than replacing them with correct items makes sense to me, Im spraying it all with bedliner, but with details . . you'll see. I'm putting a 3 point hitch on the back to operate implements. It's going to be useful and fun on the property. I did order a correct rear valance, so I'm waiting on that to arrive. I'll savage my tailgate surround.

Got the welding done today on the rear crossmember. Also removed the 3/4" thick filler on the rear corners, yes 3/4".

I've been doing a bit of work. The rear of this jeep was full of filler, 5/8-3/4 thick in some areas. So after cutting out the rust, I welded in a few patches.

Then just "had" to modify the tailgate. Its a wonder this gate was rust free and it was original. '63 stopped the Willys on it . . but my '64 was crying fot it :)

Now that I have no holes in the rear for taillights, can anyone tell me where the low mounted taillights would be originally??

pete,

I replaced mine years ago with flush mounted lights cause I did not like the stud mounted version................but if you want to see original placement and holes take a look at the July 2012 JP magazine on page 80 , that should help you.

Grote, Truck lite are just a few light manufactures, go to a place that sells truck parts & supplies, Willys was just using an aftermarket lite on there civilian Jeeps.
The original light on the drivers side had a clear window in the bottom to lite the license plate

yeah lots of pics out there for the taillights, but was wanting some accurate measurements.

Well a lot of work has been done. I was on a schedule to have this thing finished, at least the body. Here it is now in Desert Tan Bedliner

Nice job Pete. That body is probably the worst I've seen brought back to life, in a build thread.:notworthy:
