How hard is this?

Seems pretty straight forward but nothing is ever as it seems. I blew out the seals in my saginaw PS box and I scored a brand new one for $40 so now I need to swap them out.

Thanks for the help.

PS its for a 1978 CJ7

You will need a puller to get the piman arm off and the intermidiate shaft coupling should come off once you remove the clamp bolt but I have read at least one post were it provided a headache. obviously draining fluid and disconnecting hoses and removing bolts that are in tight spots will be the challenge and you should plan on several hours at best in my opinion. After the new install bleed the system with the fronts off the ground and make turns lock to lock. As I recall you may need to drop the sway bar too.
Have fun ;).

thanks,

sounds like there aren't any real "tricks" but pulling off a 32 year old box can be a pain. Gonna do it this saturday, I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Had to pull mine of the other week to change my rear seal.

We couldn't shift the pitman even wit a puller. also if it's has Power steering watch out for the hoses, as mine wouldn't come loose. i had to undo the hoses from the bottle end and drag it out that way.

Have fun :)

Attempted it today. Couldn't get the nut off that holds the pitman arm and I had the same issue as some others on here and the tack welded nuts in the frame rail broke loose so I couldn't loosen them.

Gonna take it to my buddies shop next week and try it with the proper tools.

Tossed some power steering fluid with stop leak in it and it slowed it down :)

The hoses are new so getting them off won't be an issue. I think thats actually why I am in the situation, when I put them on I did it backwards and blew off the lines which probably blew the seal :(

the pitman arm can be difficult, I would not hesitate to warm it to 2 or 300 degrees before I put the puller on it. I have been told that the shaft has a slight taper and that if you hit it on either side simultaneously it will cause it to work its way off. I have never been able to make that work but it's worth a try.
