Had a lot of oil in my air filter, replaced PCV on front of valve cover. And I added one to the rear hose that goes to air cleaner. Now it appears to just be blowing oil though valve cover gasket at rear of engine. why so much pressure build up? It has over 140,000 mi and I know I need rings. (oil in air cleaner did stop)

I've got to ask, why did you ADD a pcv valve?

Pressure is building because you added a PCV that is restricting air flow. One hose should have a PCV the other filtered air going into the crank.

I would suggest removing that added on pcv valve and put a new valve cover gasket on. The pressure in the crankcase comes from worn rings and if you do not have an oily exhaust pipe you will be fine. Install a K&N air filter as the oil won't affect it and wipe out the oil from time to time. Welcome to the forum and send in some pics, New Mexico has got to be a great place to own a Jeep.

? Why replace the valve cover gasket if the valve cover isn't leaking? I admit that to me it doesn't make sense, but thete might very well be a good reason.

You don't need/want 2-PCV valves..........
Make sure you have the CORRECT PCV valve for your engine. AMC/Jeep used many different ones over the years.
What weight engine oil do you use?
LG

Hello, I originally posted "oil in air filter" my user name and password were not working, so long story short. I'm logged in as JAKS now instead of JAK. Anyway I want to thank everyone for their replies.

Lumpy Grits, Hedgehog, Posi, I added the PCV thinking it would still let the engine breathe enough and keep some of that oil out of my air filter. That didn't work. I guess the main thing now is, this excessive oil must be due to bad rings?... LG I use 15-40w

Torxhead, Yes I have oil in the exhaust pipe, and YES!! New Mexico Is a great place to own a Jeep. I will send pics.

Like I said before-Be SURE you have the CORRECT PCV valve for your Jeep.
The wrong PCV will cause some of the issues you now see.
Also-Put a 8cyl size can of Restore in that engine and drive it some. You'll really be surprised what it does to correct blow-by. I use it in mine ;)
I use 20W-50 Castrol.......
LG

Wish I would have known that years ago with my first AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . I have since replaced it. A lot better now but still get a little oil on top of the calve cover around the PCV.

Good luck JAKS.

Thanks I might try that, for now I'm gonna remove the PCV I added and try the restore like LG suggested. I always considered stuff like a gimmick but it sounds like it could work. I'm pretty sure I have the right PCV...I got it from the parts counter so if they give me the wrong one how could I tell? And the best part is I have a second engine (AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ) that I'm sending to the machine shop on Monday. I'm really just trying to limp this one along so I can continue to feed my addiction. Thanks again to everyone for there help!!

I echo making sure you have the correct pcv. I put the wrong one in mine and replace the rear main seal twice trying to correct a leak there and finally found out I had the wrong pcv. Good luck!
