Ok, Yesterday I was 4 wheeling over some potholes on the way home when I noticed my oil pressure dropped to zero. When I got home I checked under the hood and the oil pressure switch harness had come off the oil pressure switch and oil was shooting out the switch. After re-filling with oil and cleaning up I put the harness back on the oil pressure switch, turn the jeep on an the pressure push the harness off the switch again. After some research I found that there is some kind of clip that holds the harness snug. I cannot find a clip in any of the parts sites. Also I suspect there may have been an o-ring or something like it in the harness connector. The oil sensor switch is a three (male) spade switch and the harness has female slots.

Can someone post a picture of there connector with the clip so I can get an idea of what to look for. Also a picture of inside your harness connector so I can verify if there is an o-ring inside.

I finally got it to stay on with Teflon tape around the switch to make the connection snug and a zip tie to hold the harness on the switch.

Any Help would be appreciated.

Its on a 1980 CJ7

would you take some pictures of yours?? this is a new one on me.:wtf:

X 2 :agree:

I believe mine is just a single wire...

Pics please if you can... This is the closest thing I can find (quickly) to what you are describing...

Mine looks more like this:

(not exact, but same type)

anything to seal it would work. I think teflon, o-ring "may" work on your type?

Also :ww: to the site!

Hey Guys. Ok when I left work the zip tie/teflon solution was failing so I made it back home leaking oil again. I'm now looking for a more permanent solution.

Here are some pics of the oil pressure switch and the harness. Also a pic of my attempt to get it to stay in place.

(see the three pic attachments)

ohhh that looks custom!

I'm kinda lost on that one... Would possibly have more ghetto fixs ideas, but i don't think thats what you are wanting...

IO what do you think? Ever seen one like that before?

Quite possible I bought this one off a guys last year. I never looked at the oil pressure switch on my 1983 CJ7 before I sold it.

Three prong switch, if its still wired to your manifold heater w/a relay, it's prolly wired to a Oil dummy light, . GM uses these. Wasn't stock on most AMC 49 State jeeps AFAIK.

Blown diaphragm inside switch is letting oil push the connecter off. Replace the switch. The connector will probably be fine after this.

If not, bend notch a slight "v' down lengthwise one of the prongs on the new switch.

I think bondo got this one. the hose goes to the oil pressure gauge, I am betting and the "switch" is for the manifold heater of maybe the electric choke. Follow the red wires and see where you end up. For now I am betting that the local parts house should be able to find you something to replace the switch with to at least plug up the hole.:D

Bondo, you were dead on. I did not realize that there was a diaphragm in the oil pressure switch. makes perfect sense. I replaced the switch and all is good.

For the record I believe the Clip to hold the harness on is just a myth.

Much Thanks guys for the help.

I still want to know where the red wires go.

Glad I could help, Garry. Been lurking here a year. Paying it forward, now.

What is the brass fitting that screws into the block to which the oil pressure light switch and sending unit are attached?

Where would a guy get this?
