What do you use for an onboard air system if you have one?
Thanks in advance:D.

I use a CO2 cylinder

My cylinder is bigger than necessary. It's 20 lb. but a 10 lb tank is big enough. I originally got it for homebrewing.
It works great.

The Sept. issue of JP magazine reviewed 10 products to fill your tires on the trail. The best and fastest solution was the PowerTank CO2 tank.

They say it's "blazingly fast". It puts out 45 cfm. The 2nd fastest they tested was Kilby Air Boss at only 6.94 cfm which uses a compressor mounted on your engine not unlike an air conditioner compressor.
The major difference between the PowerTank and my CO2 tank is the regulator. The PowerTank has a high flow regulator. It's much faster than mine but I can still fill my 36" tires in 2 minutes each. I use my watch to get the pressure approximate before I use the tire gauge.

I use a 10 lb. power tank and also carry along a portable Viar compressor.

After concidering my options I decided to go with a built in system, fill time was not super critical and did not want something else to carry or have to refill.
Here is what I ended up with....

I convert Rover air suspension to coils from time to time, usually due to leaky air bags. So I save the old parts, and when I get a complete system, I put one together for auxiliary air. These factory Rover pumps go for over 500 new. If they can keep a 6000 pound truck off the ground, they can air a tire or two and run your lockers.

I will be running a converted A/C compressor on my next engine, just because the engine I am putting in already has the compressor on it...and I already have the tanks.
The C02 ones are nice, but I would forget to fill it, then would need it out in the field..I can live with taking a bit to air my tires up, and knowing I can run air tools all day long.

Is it a York or similar that is self oiled? otherwise it looks like a pita to set up.

Im running a York compressor to a 2½ gallon Viar tank mounted above my rear driveline.
The system is flawless

yep mine is a York, also.

So how long does a 10lb powertank last ?

thx

I can air up my 33's from 10# to 30# about a dozen times. Kinda hard to tell as I also use it to fill other tires at times.
It costs $10 to fill it up and places to fill it are few and far between around here.

Ok I have 33's so real world between 12 to 20 times and $10 to fill once in a while :) and yah about $480 on ebay.

Simplicity vs complexity is it worth it to have a plug and play system

How much for a York system out the door?

I can get York compressors all day long for $20-$50. Most of the time you can find the correct bracketry at a bone yard, if not, it can be fabbed or purchased from onboardair.com. A few dollars worth of hose and fittings and you are in business. Add oil/air filter and pressure switch for $20, and a tank can be almost anything rated over 150psi. Viar sells some nice overpriced ones.

Ok so I can get the complete kit for 1K and some install time or 10lb power tank for $460 no install time? Simplicity vs complexity is it worth:eek:

2.5 CFM is pretty good, If I had an air lock axle I could see on board air but this looks a lot more practical to me. 10 minutes to air back up? no problem, I think the important thing is dependability. If this will last for 6 years having the :dung: used out of it and its just $70 this is the way to go. I don't need the weight or the added clutter under the hood. If I was going to go "on board" anything it would be an arc welding system. IMO

If you have a York compressor on board that is a simple reliable system.

That power tank system looks to be $510 on Amazon. It may take a little longer but until I convert my York I use one of these:

Q Industries SuperFlow Hi-Volume Air Compressor — 12 Volt, 120 PSI, Model MV50 | Single Stage Electric Air Compressors | Northern Tool + Equipment

...won it as a door price at a Relay For Life event about 6 years ago and I have used the :dung: out of it since then.
