Doing some body work on the CJ7 so I can paint it. I was just curious if anyone has encountered the same situation as me. I want to sand and prep the windshield frame for paint but the windshield is still in. I was debating on taking it somewhere to have the glass and rubber removed or just trying to tape it up and paint with it in.? any thoughts?

i've heard of people prying up the rubber seal and putting a small dia string in the gape, so paint can be applied underneth the seal.

Ive taped plenty of them and been ok . The worst part will be found on the bottom side of the windshield frame. Im asuming by your post youve already taken the windshield frame off the tub. If the bottom is solid I wouldnt worry about the area directly around the windshield.

A buddy cracked his taking it out to paint it.

As Pete said "if the frame is not rusted, just tape it off and paint. :D

It comes down to how well you want to do the job. If you are looking to just slap some paint on it knowing you are gonna sell the jeep or do it right later I'd just tape it off. Otherwise you know what to do. Rust WILL be hiding under that rubber gasket - it might even be the worst part of your frame.

I've seen pretty good looking frames with fairly jacked up sheet metal "holding" in the windshield i.e. inches of sections rusted out, etc.

My 83' was rusted under the gasket. The rest looked OK, but I had to get a new frame because the gasket flange was half gone. I'm glad I took it out.

Take it out, as was stated before, more than likely, there will be rust such as this...
