Hi,

Wondering if anyone has a CJ with Old Man Emu lift kit, and 33's. I'm considering this setup for an 85 CJ, and would like to see how it looks. Rocky Road Outfitters say that the kit with the YJ springs has about 3" lift, and that it would work well with 33's.

Thanks,
Marc

I’m doing the same build right now on the same year. I’ve heard everything from 2”-3” lift is what you’ll get. I’m still at the assembly phase (frame up rebuild) so no photos, but wanted to provide what I’ve found.

I’m adding a 1” shackle lift to ensure I have the clearance for the 33” tires. Just be sure you check your pinion angles after install; you may need to shim the axles.

No pics, but I'm running the same lift on my 8 and 32's with no issues at all. Next set of tires will likely go 33's myself

Here's a buddy's 84 with the 2.5 OME YJ spring conversion (no body lift) and sporting 33 BFGs. They fill up the wheel wells pretty well. As it's a street driver, he hasn't had any issues with scrubbing, but suspect it would if off road and flexing.

I'm planning to run the same combination springs and tires on my CJ8 .

Excellent, thanks for the pic. That's exactly the look I'm going for.

Ome YJ conversion, YJ length shackles, and 33 BFG all terrains. Note the BFG A/Ts actually measured 32 and 1/4 inch dia brand new. I put 3/8 inch pieces of steel between the frame and the spring hangars so I wouldn't have to notch the front bumper.IMG_20170402_193837.jpg

Extend the bump stops a little and no rubbing even without a body lift.IMG_20180615_101752.jpgIMG_20170402_193454.jpg

Btw nice to see a fellow road racer playing with CJsIMG_20170402_193530.jpgIMG_20170402_193934.jpg

R717, nice photos. What is the difference between YJ shackles as compared to CJ?

Thanks Ultrunner. IIRC CJ shackles are 3in, YJs are 4.

That’s what I was seeing. Just wanted to verify. I’ve been seeing shackles for my OME kit with a 1” lift and was wondering if that was on top of the already 1” larger YJ shackles.

@R717 - Does the OME kit come with standard YJ shackles (3") or the longer 4" ones? Also, what is IIRC?

Regarding road racing, I guess I felt that I wasn't throwing away enough money racing, so I had to get another bank account draining hobby! Where/what do you race? I'm Northeast located, so generally run the tracks in this area.

It's been a few years since I did it. I ended up piecing mine together rather than getting a kit. I used the heavier OME springs on all four corners due to hardtop and eventual winch. I splurged with crabtree hangars and shackles. I can dig up more details on what I did if you decide to go that route.

Found a thread in my old bookmarks, it's long but there are several posts with good parts lists and issues to consider:

I'm running an old 911 in vintage but parts have gotten so ridiculous, thinking about something more reasonable with more even racing. I've run a few arrive-and-drive SSM races with WDCR and had an absolute blast, that might be where I end up. LRP is on the bucket list...

R717, that is the same recipe I’m pursuing on my Scrambler build- heavy OME springs on all the corners and Crabtree hangers and shackles. Hope you’ve been pleased, because the anticipation is killing me! :)

Quick question. What was the total lift at the end of your YJ spring conversion? I’ve read that the OME YJ springs will provide 2-2.5”. Are you seeing another ~1” with the longer YJ shackles?

My thoughts are at the end of the day you should be seeing 3-3.5” of lift, is that right?

Unfortunately I got lazy before starting the lift install and didn't take a baseline height measurement. My gut says it's about 3 inches, so that's with the YJ shackles and the 3/8 in spacers under the shackle hangars. I'd be happy to take axle to frame measurements now for comparison, just let me know. Here is a pic with the same wheels and tires with stock cj suspension20140607_141321.jpg

Your rig looks awesome. I’m just curious because I haven’t yet purchased my shackles and was researching getting 3/8” or 5/8” lift versus the 0” YJ shackles to ensure tire clearance.

I just installed the OME Rocky Roads lift on my 84 CJ7 ...

This is using the Old Man Emu springs for Wrangler (2.5" wide) for approx 3" lift. I also went with the nitrogen charged shock option.

I will say that the instructions are for the birds. Not to be relied upon by novice installers.

I was a little disappointed the kit did not come with new ubolts, but I am a big fan of the included ubolt skid plates. Expect to trim the threads of your stock ubolts so they are protected inside the skid plate.

For reference the before pics show the Jeep with no lift on 30" tires. Afterwards she sits on 33x12.50 ProComp ATs on 15x10" wheels. I think the 10" wheel makes the tire look way better than a 9" wheel.

I'm very happy with the results, she drives much better than stock. The wider Wrangler spring is noticeably better.

I made no changes to stock brake lines, steering linkage, or driveshafts. I did not add shims at the spring perches. All works just fine on the road. I should say this Jeep is at best a dirt road driver, not a true wheeler. The Transfer Case crossmember drop kit actually made my Transmission shift better than it used to.

I did not have any of the missing hardware issues that are commonly reported with kits shipped by Rocky Road Outfitters.

Overall, I would not say this is a GREAT value, but I believe the price is fair for the product and the functional improvement is excellent.3A9A69DC-A2CC-4FC6-B237-7286EEE172CF.jpg87349E8F-350D-4CA3-951C-C385980E33C0.jpgB57BD45B-6A86-4B3E-9FD6-2E016D6B59FF.jpgIMG_0498.jpgIMG_0500.jpg
