Just finished replacing the gear box on a 76 CJ5 . Man what a job! The nut for the pitman arm to the gear box was worn so I had to replace it. After searching just about everywhere, I got a nut that fit at Napa for about $2.00. If you ask them for the specific nut they won't have it but they matched the one I had and it worked! Now that I have everything together the power steering belt seems too big and I can't find any way to adjust it. Any advice would be appreciated.

There should be two 9/16 nuts on the back of the pump by the hoses to the pump, and a long nut in the middle that is 9/16. Loosen nuts and use center nut to rotate pump assemble towards fender to tighten belt. If there is no more adjustment left a shorter belt or new stock belt may be needed.

Look at this picture. To adjust the PS belt loosen the 2 nuts circled in red. This will loosen the PS pump. Adjust the belt by putting a half inch ratchet into the square hole circled in blue. This will allow you to tighten the belt.

Purple77CJ7 talks about a long nut. I've had 2 CJ's but I don't remember ever having a long bolt. I had regular bolts but my open end wrench would slip and round off the bolts. There isn't enough room for a ratchet.
What I did was make my own long bolts. I bought a coupling nut and cut it in half with a hack saw.

I used each half as a long nut. You can see in my picture I now have plenty of room to grab the "long nut".

That's a good idea on the adjustment nuts, it is tight for wrenches. My pump does not have that bracket for a square drive. I have a long nut in between the two other nuts. It's welded I think to the back of the housing.

Sorry for confusion I should have post a pic earlier. Red circle is one of two retaining nuts, blue circle is my adjuster nut. I don't know if my pump is stock.

Thanks for all the help. My pump adjusting nut was at a different location. at red arrow in the picture, but all the info I got gave me a hint where to look and I finally got everything together and working.

Glad you goter' done! Three different setups for adjustment. That's a jeep thing.
