Hi All,

I am nearly finished a year long rebuild of a 77 CJ5 . All I have left is the steering column and wiring everything up with a Painless kit. When I purchased this jeep the column was all torn up and nothing was wired through it. If someone can tell me what pieces I am missing and what order to reassemble I would greatly appreciate it. The larger shinny cover in the front was purchased from Collins Brothers but I do not believe it is part of the non-tilt column. I have trudged through snow and slop at the 3 junk yards within 30 miles of my house and I haven't found a suitable column to disassemble and take what I need. I have the shop manual with the parts diagram but I cant identify all of the pieces. Any pictures you have will help and if any of you have the parts I need I am happy to purchase. This has been the most frustrating part of this rebuild and I just want to get it done so I can wire it up and then finally drive this thing. Thanks in advance for your help.

(I cant figure out how to upload pictures to this other than to put on snapfish and copy the URL. if there is a better way please let me know.)

Pictures - Lots of people use Photo Bucket. It is a free service for what you need to do here. Upload your photos to Photo Bucket, the open the picture from your photo bucket library, clink on the link icon and copy the link, paste in your message. This will give you large picture and not small thumb nails.

Steering Column - I used the above diagram for my reassembly and the shop manual. Please note that mine is an automatic non-tilt column. Basically they are all GM columns. Here are some picture of my assembly / disassembly:

All the parts that came out of the steering column assembly:

After you take the steering wheel off there is a locking plate that is under tension held by a snap ring. There is a special tool you can get from any auto parts store that compresses the locking ring making it easier to remove the snap ring. Here is that tool: AutoCraft Steering Wheel Lock Plate Remover (3-Piece) AC578/W80650: Advance Auto Parts

With the steering wheel off, this is the turn signal switch:

Here is the turn signal switch out. It has three screws that hold it together. One is hidden, so you will nee do flip the signal lever to get to it.

Now you can see the four screws that hold the upper body on. Remove these.

In this picture you can see where the wires from the turn signal assembly run down the inside of the column.

Next is this mess. Remember mine is for an automatic. This is the backside of the upper housing you removed. The long linkage runs down the inside of the column to the ignition switch. Remove the two screws on the plate that holds everything in. Remove the locking cylinder at this time, then remove the roller cam for the ignition switch.

Here is a picture of the lower part of the column with the mounting bracket and ignition switch on it.

I know that this is backwards from assembly, it just happens to be the pictures that I have.
