Does anyone know where to find the 7/16x16x4 power steering bolt for a '79 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , I-6? Will post OEM# later. It's like looking for the holy grail!

You might have a look at your local hardware store if you haven't already. I have looked for bolts at my local hardware, had what I needed every time....including metric. :chug:

Yes, 16 tpi. verified at fastenal and a machine shop. Seems IMPOSSIBLE to find, have checked almost all of the junk yards in my area, what jeeps are there have been picked over pretty good. Checked hardware stores, auto parts stores, looked online. Can find 7/16 x 16 in shorter lengths, but nothing near long enough. Can find 7/16 x 14 or 7/16 x 20 in the correct length all day. Hate the idea of re-tapping, but may have to. One more junk yard off the beaten path, then i may have to resort to just that.

I would suggest buying that 7/16-14x4 and trying it on for size. I am thinking this is the bolt that goes into to top of the intake manifold. If by some weird incident you do have that 16 tpi, I would advise installing a heli-coil to replace that odd thread. Heli-coils are always better in aluminum anyway.

Have tried the 14 tpi, wont start. Never heard of helicoil....how is it with cast? Thanks for the input.

Heli Coil inserts are sold at most auto parts stores. There is a lot of web info on them.

Looking at my Machinery's Handbook I see that there is a 7/16-16 listed, I'm stumped, but not enough to take mine off to check the thread count. If it does turn out to be that thread, I can make a spare or go the heli coil route.
