The power steering gear box have seen better days and needs to be replaced. It has a "flat" spot in the middle of travel, among other issues. Kind of like old motorcycle folks can develop.
Found two part numbers on it. One 5689010 and another 7812145. After some googling, thinking that it's a gm saginaw, but can't find any for sale.

have anyone else replaced this box before or can recommend a different one that is still being manufactured. I will also be replacing the steering shaft and coupling.

Thanks

It is a GM Saginaw........there were a few different models they used.......look under the box next to the large bell on the case in front......is there a large 6 & 7 cast in there on top of each other?.......some input splines were 3/4" while the HD gear box was 13/16" x 36 spline......most of the parts stores can get you a stock rebuilt replacement one or if your into getting the valving inside tuned up and tailored to your driving where it is not real touchy on the free way get it rebuilt by someone like: Lee Manufacturing Company Sun valley, CA 91352 Steering gears Pumps Reservoirs Tom is one of the best in the business.

Thanks guys. I'll look for those 6&7 and give Lee a call. Any suggestions on how to pick out the right shaft and coupler?

I found two numbers on the driver side of the gear box. It's an 8 and a 2 below it. Took a couple pics but for some reason the format is wrong.
Do those numbers mean anything?

Not to me , but ya may want to ask Tom Lee, he is a busy guy , so you can talk with his wife also, very smart gal...........if you can measure the OD of the input shaft.........it should be either a 3/4x30 or 36 spline (.750) or 13/16 x 36 spline (.813) and that box will either be a 3-bolt or 4 bolt mount. AMC had a few different gear boxes in those early CJ5 's and then finally settled on the series 800 HD box that has the 13/16" input........In either case what ever you have to rebuild should be fine...............Lee also sells steering shafts and u-joints to get ya fixed up.
