1984 CJ7 Base Hodge podgey thing, 4spd, some kind of twin stick transfer case, 4.2 swapped in, other more questionable things added or removed by PO also. I'm still sorting it out. I really don't know much about it yet. EDIT: I still dont know much about it.
Hi, I am in the process of adding power steering to my 7. First it has all serpentine pulleys on a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . I got the pump in place and realized through a lot of fiddling and googling, that I have the wrong 1/8" plate bracket. I have a triangle and need a diamond. Its pretty plain, if I had the dimension, outter edges, bolt holes center to center etc I could probably make one at work out of scrap or at home even. Or even some one smarter than me with computers could make up a template that could be printed. I'd guess it would fit on a piece of paper? I'm a machinst though I can work with just dimensions.

Back story I bough this thing in a hot mess. (I drove it home though so theres that) I cant even say its an 84 really. The title and VIN say it is but Thats as far as it goes. To list everything would be for another post and I'd probably add to it every day. Anyway I've manage to get together all the major components for this steering project but every time I take a few steps forward I fall back a few more. Thats where I'm at now. I know Jeeps in general but the years and models I have are so far a part its almost like I'm new at it. My first question stands but I have many many more. I'll be asking about power steering pulley dimensions or a Dorman part number at some point I bet.

Also if someone has a spare collecting dust I'd love to talk might save me some trial and error time.

Thanks everyone.

Jessica

First, since it has a serp belt set up, it is a California CJ. Keep that in mind when looking for parts. If you are looking for parts and they have a listing for California, you need that part. Water pump MAY BE reverse from a non California CJ.

Not sure why you need that "diamond" shape as it was for the air pump mount.
Not too familiar with the Ca models. If it has the air pump, are you required by state smog to still run original smog parts or are is it exempt because of age?

At any rate, I do have one that looks like the one in the parts manual that I would be happy to loan you to make your own.

You do have another option. If you would like or plan to put in a tilt column at some point, you can use the entire set up from a YJ with serp belt set up, or all the parts from an XJ but substituting a YJ shaft.

You said "converted to carb" by PO. All CJ's were carb. Might want to get the numbers from the head and block to see what year it is.

PM me with info if you want to borrow the bracket.

Based on your profile, take some pictures of the entire vehicle. Include the engine, Transmission , Transfer Case , inside the Jeep and outside the Jeep. Start another post with all of that and we will help you identify everything you have. Then we can start helping you with your problems. :D Sound like a plan!

:ww: :dbanana:

Never underestimate what a PO has done.
I agree that some pictures would help you here.
YES, it's a CA. model, because of the serpentine belt.
Can you also add a few pictures of the engine bay. '84/85/86, the only engines you could get was a 6 cyl or a four cyl and both were carb'd.
Can you post a picture the vin plate on the driverside firewall? Or at least what that vin# is. It will tell you what the Jeep had(if it's the true correct vin).

The engine may be California but Im not sure of the rest. The PO said it was a tbi or some such injected 2.5 before. Im not so sure as I had an 84 xj 2.5 that was carb. As of right now Im in the trust portion of "trust but verify". Ill get pics as soon as I can.

As for needing the diamond bracket. Good question. One Ive been asking myself for a week. The short of it is Ive seen it in other pictures of CJs with power steering attached to the idler pulley on the drivers side. Ive decided to reinstall the idler as it was when it was manual. It worked before and should again. Again Ill take pics and see what yall say. Im new to CJ5 /7 let alone adding a component like power steering.

Just today I started questioning whether it has the right pump in it. Once I learned itvwas possible. Some of the symptoms are there but I havent had time to investigate yet. That may be for a whole different post tthough.

Thanks for responding. :)

Well here are some initial pictures of the area just after removing the idler pulley and with the pump mocked up some. I hope this helps for now.

You have the wrong fuel filter installed. The correct one has the smaller return line coming out the same side as the line that goes to the carb. Position that return line at 12 O'clock.
You have a caped off fitting on the WP and your manifold that should have a 3/4' coolant line attached and running to each other. There should also be a coolant line at the back of the manifold.
BTW-No Jeep CJ ever came with any form of FI from the factory.
Look at this-
AMC 258CID I6

Again I ask you to post your VIN# so we can tell what the Jeep was built with.

This may help some. Shows the belt routing and all accessories and idler pulleys. Bottom right unless you have a/c. Post #2 shows the "diamond" bracket and lists as California with serp belt. How is your belt adjusted? By moving alternator?

Heres the numbers you asked for Lumpy. And a few other pics. I got the idler pulley to mount up the way it was. Im betting this will be fine. The question you asked about the diamond bracket onlyh helped to confirm what I was starting to think. That I didnt need it after all :)

Yellow, as the pictures you posted. Im not seeing them on my end :/

Just took off my power steering pump today. I will trace the bracket and put some measurement on it if you still need it

I think I'm good but thank you! If not I'll regret it but you dont have to worry about it. :)

An auto even wow. Dude didn't mention that. Interesting. Thanks :)

I prefer a Manual anyway but still. Maybe he didn't even know. None The less it explains a few other things I've seen through out the Jeep. I'll try to work on getting a build post started.

Any ideas on the engine?

I just learned I'm going to Japan at some point this year and may be there awhile. My priorities are quickly changing

Half way there. Now for my next trick. Mounting the gear box aand installing the lines and intermediate shaft. :chug: :p

Also I might change the name of this thread to questions about soecific power steering parts. Is that allowed?

Ok Im home from Japan and I started working on the Jeep again. I will be removing the grill and radiator to do other work and figured it would be a good time to address the water pump question/issue. I would like to be totally sure of what I need vs what I have. Ill be making a new thread tomorrow for it but i wanted to quote you here so you can see where Im coming from with my questions.

Thank you
