Hi Guys

Just noticed on my driveway my steering box has dumped all my power steering fluid. On inspection the leak is coming from the seel where the steeing column bolts on.

Is there a repair kit you can get? as i've looked online but all i can find are replacement boxes. And it looks like it could just be a seel or "O" Ring.

I'm guessing the drive back from my weekend away and the abuse i gave her in the quarry didn't help. Also i doubt in 30 years the part has been replaced, so i think she done well :)

It's also a RHD model not sure if the boxes are different. and i'd need to get it shipped to the UK if i can't find anywhere over here that stocks it.

Thanks for looking

Don't know if it will help but NAPA sells a total rebuild kit for the steering box and as I recall it's quite reasonable.
It is, I believe, an oil seal that is leaking and you may be able to find one from a bearing supply, the trick is to find out what size it is with out disabling your ride.

thanks for teh update, do you have a part number tht you can post so we have it online here?

I know this is an old thread but this is where my box is leaking as well, how hard was it to replace and how much did it cost? I'm contemplating rebuilding or buying a refurbished.

If it's the adjuster plug and stub shaft seals they can be replace without a full rebuild.

Here is a box I rebuilt, disregard where I tapped for hydro steer.

The kit runs about $25

Rack pinion installed, note: you can see the gully in the bottom hole the piston needs to be rotated a bit to move the gully edge to the left so the balls drop in.

16 balls installed in the piston. There are 12 chrome and 12 darker balls that have to be alternated while installing. The chrome balls are 9/32 and the darker balls are .001 larger. The smaller chrome balls allow the oil to pass.

The last 6 balls have to be installed in the ball guide. You can use assembly lube although I was able to install them without the lube first try.

Side note: in most cases the kit will not come with a pitman shaft bearing. My bearing was in good condition however, if needed most any machine/bearing shop will have one.

Nice writeup!
