the return line on my power steering pump pump looks nasty. Im going to change it can i just pick up the correct diameter line from an auto parts store (and what size is it. or is it a special kind of line. And if i can replace the line with generic line how do i get the old one off. It has a clamp the look like one on a cv boot (just rip it off??) thanks.

also any tips on how not to make a huge mess

You should be able to go into any parts store and ask for power steering hose. I'd take your old one in with you and have them match it up.

On trick I learned is to take a knife and split the hose off of the fitting rather than trying to pull it off. This can lead to broken fittings.

cool thanks for the tip and for the hose clamp looking thing
ill justpry it off slowly and use a normal hose clamp. (that should work right it is a low pressure line??

Be SURE you get high-temp hose....

It has to be "power steering" hose. But what about the other end? It should have a transition to a metal line that is prebent to fit up with the steering box. You can get the whole thing at RockAuto.com for cheap, like $10-15 cheap. I just bought one a few months back.

If you can get the metal fitting with the line that's great.

When I was replacing the lines on my XJ, nobody had the metal fitting that went into the steering box. Most places said to get a section of power steering hose and some hose clamps.

Re: power steering low pressure return line

I just replaced mine. The line with the ps pump fitting on it was $11.00 at autozone.

No, not the steering pump, that line does fit on with just a clamp. The steering box / gear end needs a metal end with a threaded fitting.

Same thing as an XJ. You can either just replace the line or search around and you can find the return line with a new fitting.

Napa had return hose and fitting for $16 if I recall. Did mine about a month ago
