I'm looking for a new power steering hose. I got a set from autozone that neither fit. I had to go through 3 to finally get a new return hose made. The current pressure hose is the one from autozone. It threads in but when threaded all the way i can still pull the hose out and push in.

Am I installing it wrong or do I need a new hose?

There are 2 styles. In about 80 they went to a metric sytle fitting. Prior to that it was a flared end style. I had mine made at NAPA. If youve changed the pump or box you may have one of each style. They can still make a hose for you. My pump is on the right side from a Matador and I had no choice.

The return is a non pressurized and can be done with oil grade hose clamped to the fitting.

73CJ pretty much nailed it, what did your old fitting look like? The early versions are flared and the later versions use an o-ring.

Yeah, I guess the problem is that I swapped the AMC 232 i6 it had for a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l from an 85. So i don't have the hose to have them remake it.

as CJ wrote, you need to get the hose appropriate for the gearbox and pump.... either flare or o-ring...

I believe there are little fittings you can use to adapt from one to the other... (if you have a pump using o-ring type and gearbox using flare...or vise versa.)

NAPA can supply complete. Fittings and hose and then they crimp them on just like the factory. They need to which fitting style for both ends and the length of hose.

Whats the thread type for the pump?

Where could I find something like that?

On power steering, the pressure line at the box is 18 mm x 1.5 pitch if it's metric. The return line is 16 mm x 1.5 pitch. The inverted flare pressure line at the box is 11/16-18 and the return line is 5/8-18 if you have that.

By on the box do you mean on the pump or the gear box?

Are the gears boxes the same for the different years or do I need to check that?

Thanks for all the help.

I believe the gearbox and the pump will use the same fittings....
Obviously, different years will have one or the other style fittings...

It shouldnt be too difficult for the parts house to get this one right...

Have you tried Morris 4x4? They should be able to hook you up..
