The project: I am about to take on a power steering conversion project for my '76 CJ5 with a AMC 304 . I am pulling the parts off of an '80's CJ that had a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine in it. Everything from beyond the firewall should be a bolt-on job, but...

The problem: can I reuse the power steering bracket from the 6 cylinder engine and bolt it onto the 8 cylinder engine, or is it a different bracket configuration? I'm looking for a bolt on solution, not going to weld anything.
Anyone know where I could buy the correct bracket if the one I have from the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l will not work? I cannot seem to find it online.

Thanks for the help!!

No the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l pump bracket will not work on the AMC 304 . The pump should be fine.

The v8 bracket looks like this.

Have to hit the junk yard (AMC 304 or IIRC the 360 will also fit) or ebay.

Thanks for the heads up... Looks like this will be more of a challenge than I initially thought as it proves to be a tough one to find. Thanks.

I think you'll do better hittin' the bone yards and look for anything with a AMC 304 or 360 in it.

I picked ebay apart a while ago and didn't come up with anything for ya.

Good luck! If you don't find something soon, add another post and I'll see what luck I have around west central GA.

Thanks!
I just picked up all of the components (except for the bracket).
If anyone has or finds an extra, let me know!

Does anyone have access to a spare Belt tensioner bracket? I just broke mine and can't find anyone that sells it.

Can it be welded?

Not sure. It looks like it's cast aluminum. Just a portion of it is broken. Just so happens that is the portion that is used for leverage when tightening. I think it will still work like this as long as there isn't much torque put on it. 4a4456300c7709487c393392cc5c1f65.jpg84784166085d8358c95afcaa104fd00c.jpg

Talk to a pro welder.
A good MIG guy could do it.

It looks as if you are actually missing the adjuster. It is a metal bracket that goes on the 2 mounting bolts and has a dimple in it to space the pump the proper distance from the bracket for pulley alignment. It has a square hole for a 3/8" ratchet for adjustment. Ignore the bolt that I have through this hole. I made a pointer that aligns with timing marks on the distributor cap for on the fly timing when I am at high altitude.

I am missing the adjuster. I'm not sure why it where it is.. sometimes I shake my head at what the PO did with this jeep. Then I ask my dad "WHAT IN THE HECK WERE YOU THINKING?!"
