Ok, so the pulley sheared off at the most un-opportune time, while away from home on a hunting trip. I am not sure why, except it may because it was old (I hope that is the issue).

Of course I solved the immediate issue of getting back.

The strap was from a ratchet strap. Double figure 8 knot. It worked well.

This is what it looked like at the end of the day. It lasted a couple hours of cruising around. It is still on the jeep in the garage and will get mounted on the wall.

SO MY QUESTION IS: where can I get a new pulley? I can only find replacement ones for newer wranglers. Are they interchangeable?

Any Ideas?

Thanks,
Joe Zeppe :chug:

I would start with outfits like Morris, 4WPW, or 4WD Hardware. Then there is always junkyards. Great trail fix and thanks for sending in those pics.

Agreed. That's an idea I hope I never have to steal, but I will if necessary. Just fair warning!

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.

I have a couple hours logged on the phone so far, and more on the net. I will have to call the ones listed above. But I have looked at their sites, and none are listed, although many for newer models. I have tried to use the numbers for the pump (they don't come with a pulley) to see where else they are used, but those models don't have a pulley available neither.

Sucks.

the serpentine pulley will be interesting to find.

Dorman 300 200 Power Steering Pulley Serpentine 6 Groove Steel Black GM Each | eBay

I think it would be a GM pump/pulley, check this one out.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^Thanks, I was trying to find a cross reference to see what else used the pulley, I will have to look in that direction tomorrow. GM.

I want to get it running for this weekend, a hunt, and ride with the misses (without the kiddos) - I hope.

Does the front allen bolt ( I assume it is a bolt) unscrew out of the pump shaft?

Thanks,
Joe Zeppe

The allen wrench hole is the end of the shaft. It is there so you can hold it in place when using a pulley puller.

So it is pressed on?

Ok, I haven't jumped into the repair yet since I haven't gotten the part. Thanks for the PM and the lead.

:)That needs a special puller and installer to get the old off and push the new on..........any other attempt will screw it up..they can be bought on line or almost any Napa or auto repair firm should be able to do that for you.
:D:D:D:D

Oreillys will let you borrow one for free.

Not hard, but absolutely need the puller/installer.

Well, I have visited the Napa Auto = no help, Autozone = the guy behind the counter spent over an hour going through his stock and trying everything - still nothing, Dodge/Jeep dealer = the part has been discontinued for over 10 years. :( So I went home and found on the Dorman site the closest (just like the Autozone guy said) pully is the Dorman 300-307 kind of. the 307 is for dodge v-8s.

Now, I figured I will hit the local yards. The only one that was open on a 3 day weekend was pick and pull. It was an experience. I looked at just about everything, pulled 3 different pulleys, found that the dodge one was close, and since I took the ride, I might as well take something home. One the way out I found a chevy truck that had the retractable light still in it, so I took that too...

$5 for the pulley
$2 for the light

I got home and found the light works  but the pulley will not:censored: Like I found on the web, it is larger than the stock one, and what I could not find on the web; the offset is 0.4" too much.

I will have to call around to the California Jeep Specific yards and see if I can get one ASAP.

:)That Ham Can style pump is GM althought several manufactures used them...........If your near the Sacramento area go to J&W auto wreckers in Antalope, Ca. ask for Mark........ Hiway 80 east just before Roseville.......... take your old parts with you including your pump.......I doubt they will sell you just the pulley but they will sell you a used pump & pulley.........Or get the part numbers off the stuff and call Dorman on Tuesday 800-933-2911................or if the other pulley is only off .400 can you not modify your mount?

:D:D:D:D

Well I found one!:D I called about a dozen different Jeep Wrecking yards, steering companies, auto parts stores, dorman,... This is what I have found through too much searching.
1) they were in the Jeep CJs starting in '81 and wrangers through '90.
2) ONLY IN CALIFORNIA!
3) the part has been discontinued for 10 to 11 years.

Now I found one at J&Ws Auto wreckers in Sacramento, ca., but they wanted $125 with the pump, + shipping + taxes. That was a little high for me.

I found one that was on a jeep that was parting out, but too far away.

I ended up calling a local shop that swaps V8s into Jeeps. He had one and much cheaper. This was also the same shop that I got my howell kit from.

I got it Friday night from him, I got it on, and drove over this morning to show it off. He noticed that I was missing my horn/steering wheel cap, and misc, and gave me the stuff I was missing.

I am very happy with the outcome, because I was thinking about trying to swap in a new YJ pump and braket.

If anyone has any other info for the future, lets have it.
