1976 Jeep CJ5, 232...all I know thus far.
Would this Power Steering Gear Box: 87-95 Jeep Wrangler YJ work for my 76' CJ5 ? I've read that some might be too fast. Does anyone have a year I should be looking? From Model and year?

I know this is an older post, but I found an 89 wagoneer with a complete p/s setup. Will this work for my 76 CJ5 ? The owner said it is all factory parts and it is all clean. Looks to mount the same but will the steering be too fast?

Should turn right and bolt right up but you need to check how the steering rod mounts to the box. Cj's used a "bell" connector and Waggies used a Rag joint with 2 bolts.. knda like a flat axle flange. I think that you can grab the shaft from the colum to the box and I think it would bolt up. But 89 is alot older then what in use to working with. those are the common problems with doing a earlier swap. Also you will need to use the CJ pitman arm.

Thanks. I dont know if I will call this guy back then because hes an hr and 1/2 away and I dont wanna drive down there and buy it only to find out it dosnt fit my jeep. I will continue to look around for someone with parts in the years that will easily swap out with mine. Thanks again.

Are you converting from Manual to Power? If so the Pittman arms will be different size and length and the ability to just bolt one up may not work with your steering shaft or mount with out making some changes.

The 800 Series Saginaw boxes that Longhorn listed are all fine. They should all be a 4-bolt mount with a large casting number "76" on the box. The input shaft should be 13/16"x 36 spline. They sell adapters to just about make up any combination.
The trick is if the box is out of the Camaros , Firebirds and any small sport type cars it could be a faster ratio. The slower boxes were in the big cars. Any of them can be converted or ( re-valved) to a slower variable ratio (13-16) as which most Jeeps later had once the manufacture figured out that the box was to fast for the short wheelbase Jeeps.
Also just because it came out of a later model Jeep don't take that as a good reason that it will work. All of these Jeeps were engineered specific for the model year ,axle type, spindles , tie rod and Drag Link. Not to say they will not work but the Geometry in the swap has to be understood.
If you buy used it may have to go to a person that rebuilds gear boxes to tell you what you have ratio wise. Obviously if you buy aftermarket that re builder has done the homework for you already.
Good Luck!
