All my rides? Well I have quite a few work trucks so I will leave them off. But I own a 79 cj5.
Hey all new to this site and I have a question. First off I belong to another Jeep forum and I asked the same question that I am going to ask in here. But I got a lot of smart a^()*(&_$%$ answers. I was told that I could take the power steering pump and steering box off an early 90's Dodge half ton truck and it should bolt right on to my 79 CJ5 . Does anyone know if this is true or false? If false got any options. Remember I am on a budget. So be gentle ha ha

You can get one off of a 98-99 dodge durango, and early 70s chevys, as well as mid 80s camaros, its a saginaw style steering box with a quick turning ratio. Check the misc. Cj section for a stickied thread called useful info I thought I would share you can find alot of good stuff in there. Id link it for you but I can't right now. And welcome to the site, there are no a-holes here that will flame you for askin questions.

Hey welcome to the site! I was juuuust wondering if anybody from Montana was registered on here...and now I know! Im from Western MT, born and raised, spent a lot of time wheeling in Billings with Rimrock 4x4.

Sorry I cant contribute to your question, I think Cheapjeep covered it well. :chug:

As Cheepjeep85 pointed out you are looking for a saginaw steering box. They are common on many vehicles with very minor differences.
On the other hand I am not so sure you will have such an easy time with the steering pump. The dodge pump and brackets wont fit your jeep. I would look for a jeep pump and brackets.

Thanks getting great advice. In the other Jeepforum I belong to a guy sent me very detailed information on accomplishing this challenge. He also pointed out things that an rookie, like myself, need to look at before just installing any PS system. So now I go back to the shop and start the rebirth of my 79 CJ5

You need to fill out your profile so we know more about your rig, I am just guessings it's a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 6? if so unless you are a pretty good fabricator you need to find a used AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l pump bracket, I found mine on Ebay and they seam to be pretty easy to locate there and if you found one with the pump and pulley all the better.

You can get a box off of many vehicles but your best bet is to pull a box/pump/etc off a vehicle which has the same type engine as yours.Full size jeep pickups/wagoneers are a good bet as are many amc cars if you still have an amc engine. You will still likely need a cj pitman arm and coupler but they are easily sourced. Most saginaw boxes after '80 have o ring fittings while most '79 and older use flare fittings for the hoses and its much cheaper and easier if your pump and box both use the same type although adapter hoses are available. Its a really easy swap when you can source the box/pump/brackets off a vehicle from the same engine family.

I've read a great deal about ps conversation on this site an another. In all the 'stuff' I've read I've never seen where you can take the ps set up from a CJ7 and put it on a CJ5 . I have a 68 CJ5 , v-6, manual steer. I have an 81 CJ7 donor, that I rob parts from for projects. Bottom line; can I use the CJ7 ps set up on my 68 CJ5 ? I'm thinking of boxing the frame anyway. I know I will need to make a bracket or find one for the pump, but am I over looking something else. Both are narrow trac's, in fact I'm looking into swapping the front 30 from the 7 to the 5 also, because of the disk brakes. The 5 has a dana 27 with drum brakes. Any comments would be welcome. I'm a big boy, you are not going to make me cry.

Are the engines the same? That's more important than if its a CJ5 or CJ7 . You say the '68 has a V6 is that the 225 Dauntless Buick 225 V6 ? What's the CJ7 got? A AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ? You may have an issue getting the PS brackets on the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 .

The CJ7 is the Iron duke, the 5 has D v-6. Was also thinking about the steering column on the 7 as it has the tilt. I guess I would consider robbing the entire steering setup off the 7. Thinking about the hanging pedals as well. I have a later CJ5 frame that has the Dana 30 , but also drum brakes and manual steering. The frame is boxed on it, so there are severals options. I guess my first would be to start my own thread & stop bogartn' on this one.
