power steering ?????

hey yall, i have a 1973 beast of a jeep CJ5 i love it, really. however my wife has grown to love it also and wants to start driving her so. the problem is its a manual steering. she says its to hard to steer. so in trying to please her i want to install power steering on it. question is, what all do i need to make this happen. i know i need a pump and new steering gear but what all do i need to make it work and is there any good instructions on the install. again its a 1973 CJ5 AMC 304 .thanks in advance for any advise.

This is possible. The steering gear box is not a problem. Need a power steering box from an 80-83 CJ or FSJ and the pump and mount from any AMC V8, hoses and belts. Most of it would be just buy it and put it on. The coupling to attach the steering shaft to the gearbox input can be found at Flaming Rive.

Well worth the effort. She'll love it. You, however, may have to re-learn how to drive the thing if you're used to the manual steering! Definitely worth the trouble.

Do Some research first ...............The mount from the existing manual steering gear box on your frame is probably a 3 bolt mount.........Most HD Saginaw Power steering gear boxes are 4-bolt mounts.......The pittman will also have to be changed as the sector shaft diameter between the manual & power boxes are different sizes. That may also mean that the original Drag Link may also have to be changed. Take a good hard look at your system and then if possible take a look under a 1980's CJ and look at that arrangement.... Some things will work and others not.........Its not a direct bolt in.
