1979 CJ5, 304, completely rebuilding it.
Ok, so first off I am new here as I just purchased my first CJ. I also own a '09 4-door JK lifted on 35's, but wanted something more classic. I have never done a write up on a build as lifting a Jeep or messing with drag cars is not really a build. If you can't deal with horrible writing and probably a lot of rookie mistakes, please go to a more advanced thread.

That being said, I just purchased a '79 CJ5 with a AMC 304 . It was nicknamed Crayola since it looks like a Crayon with the hood down. It is pretty much a pile of metal that says Jeep on the side, but that just means it needs some love.

Prior to these photos it was quickly decided that I needed to rebuild the carb, put new plugs and wires in it, and see if it would run. Which it did, thankfully. Smokes like a beast, but I will get to that later.

I hit up the parts store for the general essentials, oil, filter, coolant, belts, hoses, etc. Of course they gave me a wrong belt and a wrong water outlet gasket, so as of today I am still waiting on that so I can get the cooling system back together and get the belts back on.

Last night I flushed out the radiator and engine until it ran clear. Was disgusting! Took about an hour, but clean as a whistle now. Hopefully I can get the gasket and belt today and get that together tonight.

The entire brake line and master cylinder system is fried so I ordered a new master cylinder and a full SS brake line kit from inline. That will be a fun project next week. i will take pictures and write that up then.

Also last night I decided that the steering gearbox needed to go so I can get a re-manufactured on it. That was a hassle. Since the sttering shaft hasn't been off since it was build, I had to use quite a bit of PB blaster and an air chisel, regular chisel, hammer, and a lot of elbow grease. Still wouldnt budge. Moved on down to take off the box and bracket. 3 of the 4 bolts on the pump were easy, 4th is impossible (back top one). Taking off the bracket wasnt the most fun either. Top two bolts, easy, two of three bottom bolts, easy. Third one the nut was no longer welded inside the frame and was spinning free. I had to cut a hole in the side of the frame to get a wrench on it and ended up breaking the bolt in half. No big deal right. HAHA

Got that off then moved on to the tie rod assemble from pitman arm to knuckle. Also, hasn't been off since it was built. Tons of PB Blaster and a brass hammer later, it came off, but is shot. Both ends have 0 grease, 100% dirt and sand, and barely move. Have to order that today. Now back to ripping out the steering shaft. with enough force, anythign will move. So I just ripped on it until it came out. Waalaaa, it was done.
