I just recently purchased a 1974 CJ5 for $100 bucks. It had a AMC 232 i6 I-6 still bolted up, but the tranny and Transfer Case were laying in the floorboard. The tranny has to be either a T-14 or T-15 but is in a thousand pieces the Transfer Case , I believe, is a Dana 20 and is still intact. I don't know how long these parts were in the weather.
I have a 350 engine and a TH-350 tranny out of a 1977 2wd truck that I was wanting to use with the Dana 20 if that is possible and relatively cheap, or would it be cheaper to use what I have and get the tranny and Transfer Case rebuilt.

check out Novak and Advance Adapters. thats a swap done thousands of times. biggest problem with using an automatic tranny in a CJ5 is rear driveshaft length. If it were me, I'd stick a granny 4 spd in front of the Dana 20 .

BTW, I'm very jealous...I can't find anything around here for that kind of price...good find :)

I've done a few of those swaps...relatively easy...either of the listed adapter company's (Novak and AA) can set you up with all the piece's you need. From personal experience, I'd choose Novak over AA (higher quality parts and machining). As also stated, rear drive shaft length can be an issue but it mostly effects those with a good deal of lift...stock height or a couple inches doesn't appear to have a problem. Cost wise....you'll save money by rebuilding what you have...enjoyment wise, I'd go with the Chevy.

Welcome to the forums bwbfarms! :chug:

Sound like a great project and you have many choices. A 350 in it as others have stated is an easy swap that many have done. The only thing I would not do is that auto Transmission unless you ran a CV rear drive shaft. Coming from personal experience, we broke rear u-joints and threw rear shaft continuously when we had a small block Chevy and an auto in a CJ5 . Of course, that was before CV shafts were available freely on the WEB.

Let us know what you decide and keep us updated!

thanks everyone, i'll probably either get what i have fixed or try to find a stock part or two in a junkyard for now. i'm a little short on funds right now but i want to get this thing running pretty soon and i can probably afford to do it by putting the stock parts back in, but i'm most definately gonna put that 350 in there when i can afford to do so!

Welcome to the forum
Looks like you are gonna have some:beer:drinking to do and a few :censored: words before you are done but its all worth it
