Hi Guys,
Been away for awhile and the Jeep was waiting patiently in the garage. Took it out Friday for a drive to the river. When I fired it back up, the PS box was spraying fluid. Shut it off and noticed that the cast circular ring on the front of the box cracked and the O-ring gasket pushed out. I was able to make the short drive home without ruining the pump luckily. The PO installed the PS setup as I believe 79 CJ7 's were manual steering. Looking for some advice for a replacement box as I don't have the $$ for a rebuilt one. Hoping for a direct bolt in. Let me know if you need any more info.
Thanks,
Mark

I think you should try to turn your damaged box in for a rebuilt one or get yours repaired by a shop that specilizes in that type of work. The Sagiinaw power steering stepup was one the things that AMC did right. You should at least have one of those steering box braces.

You can find that ps box on a lot of vehicles in the junkyard several manufactures used it

:)The 4 bolt Saginaw box was used on GM exclusively from the late 60's through the 90's......along with several other cart makers. Does yours have a 3 or 4 bolt mount? Take it off and send us a picture of 3 sides. Pretty standard Box. The only problem in getting one from a junk yard is not knowing Its condition. Best to swap from another Jeep from that same era unless your rebuilding then the re-builder can give you valving to suit your needs.

I will pull it off tomorrow and see if it is the 3 or 4 bolt box and try to get the camera to work. I see one for sale in the classifieds on here from an '81 CJ.... will that be the same as my 79? When I was looknig them up online(and going  at the $$), I noticed one steering box listed for '79 and earlier, and a different one for 80-86. I could deal with a slow leak... as the wife says EVERYTHING I own leaks..lol !! Old trucks, old Jeeps, old Harleys.
Let me know if the '81 pump will work for my '79. Thanks guys !

I've gotten several used from late 70s chevys for $25-35. They are a dime a dozen.

:)Surfbum: Just curious , were the bolts loose on the box and or the mounts?

Just got in from the garage. The box is a 4 bolt; 2 from the top thru the crossmenber(which of course required removal of the custom winch mount I had installed), and the two that require unbolting the spring hanger to get the brackets off the frame. All the bolts were tight and yes, I have a steering brace installed (the one that clamps around the box above the pitman arm and goes to the PS frame rail). The box cracked right in the front around the circular casting and a piece broke off. It looks like a cap is secured behind the casting somehow and has an O-ring seal that has now pushed out where the circular casting cracked. When it split, I inmmediately lost my power assist. Not sure how that round piece originally goes in, but nonetheless I'm sure this box is scrap.

The number stamped on it is "5691676" then under that "6 / 0237. I'm guessing it is the Saginaw box. Flex BT has one in the classifieds from his 81 CJ. I am wondering if that will fit on my '79???

Thanks guys !!!

Surfbum,

:)Love to see some pictures of the broken box.........on the bottom front facing the Left Front Frame rail is there a big 7 & 6 cast in there with the numbers on top of each other?
As far a the two boxes are concerned they both should be close to each other........4 bolt mount and Power, the sector shaft size and input shaft should be the same although most were 36 spline but the OD on some were different? One of the things unknown would be how the other boxed was valved as compared to the old one , and of course what condition that box is in would also remain a question.
If yours expired internally , you may want to flush out your whole PS system including your pump............I have never seen one that broke the case without some outside force pushing against it...........so did this one get a piece of metal from the pump????
