When you guys have welded your axle tubes to the diff housing did you use a nickel base rod? Or did you just use a smaw 7018 or a mig e70s-6? I have never welded a diff and I am looking for some feed back on what has worked good. Of course the pre and post heat treatment would be used.

nickle would work but if it were mine I would go 7014 stick , slow cool and less draw than 7018 or nickle. no way I would MIG this. short welds, 3/4"-1" at most 3 or 4 times, even spaced. I have never done this but this would be what I would try first.

I took mine into the local welding shop that were Pro's. They charges $30 and I didn't have worry. Only one side.

I did tack it up first.

I welded my tubes myself. Per heated and welded short beads, and moved around welding different spots. I used 7014 rod. I also peened the diff as things cooled to help relieve stress. At the same time I welded a truss to tubes and diff housing. I moved around between the two, so one spot didn't get to hot. That was two years ago, and all is good. It's not as hard as you think.

Good question Driver. I have also read where you should heat up the cast center section a bit with a torch before welding, and then use it some to let it cool slowly.

With cast the most important thing you can do is preheat and then cool slowly with a torch. The preheat greatly reduces stress. 7014 sounds like a good choice for rod.
