Okay, so I'm new here and tried to search the forum and got some info, but I need a little more. I have an 81 CJ7 .
I found that I have PV and it may be the reason I keep bleeding my brakes with poor results. My question is, how do I know if it needs to be open or closed when bleeding. I see that it has a brass nut with a button in the center that is flush with the nut. Before I break it, can someone tell me what to do with it?
And I read that the pedal pushrod length has to be correct. My brake pedal is sitting lower than the clutch pedal by about half. Is there some way to adjust it or does it need replaced?
I changed the rear brakes yesterday. The right side adjuster was seized and I thought that might have been the reason I wasn't getting any pressure. After I changed it, I can feel the brakes making contact but I don't feel the pressure. So I'm thinking I need to bleed them again, but I'm not sure how to work the PV. I can't really afford to break and replace it right now. As the cj and my bike keep me broke enough already.
Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris.

I think you should push the little button in with the end of a screw driver as you pump the brakes. this kind of makes it a two man job. there is a little clip that you can buy that is for ABS brakes that slips on the nut and holds the button in. If you have a friend to lay on his back and hold the pin it is a bit cheaper and a bit more interesting. I am sorry, I looked for a link for the clip and struck out.

Oh yea,:ww:

Thanks IO. Is the button supposed to only be out 1-2mm? It doesn't seem to push in very far.
I haven't messed with it in a couple of days, but something that came to mind is, when I bled the brakes the fluid was very old. I flushed all of it out until clean fluid was coming out. Could air still be in the lines because of the PV? Or is the air being trapped in the PV causing unequal pressure between the front and back?
Do you have any thoughts on the pushrod?

I guess the first question I would ask is just what "poor results " you have after bleeding your brakes. Are they spongy or hard with not a lot of stopping power? the button just needs to go in just a little bit, 2mm sounds about right. Spongy would say air to me and hard with out enough response would indicate you need a new PV. IMHO:cool:

After I bled the brakes the first time, the pedal went straight to the floor because a rear adjuster was seized. Then I put new brake shoes and parts on, adjusted the shoes and re-bled the lines. Now when I push the pedal it moves fast for a little bit at first, then I feel the shoes make contact but no pressure. When I say pressure, I am refering to what I am used to feeling with other vehicles. Not new cars, but something like my old 78 chevy. I would say it feels hard when braking, but not until the shoes make contact. I'm starting to wonder of the front pads are even working. Which as you described, the PV being bad, would make sense. I am going to try and bleed them again tomorrow. This time depressing the button, as I wasn't aware of that when I did them before. If that doesn't help, then I will look for a new PV.

And thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.
