Hi SW, I'm no expert but I can explain the basics. The Jeep QuadraTrac was designed to be a full time 4WD system. In the Normal mode, the jeep is in full time 4WD but the front axle and rear axle can turn somewhat independently of one another.....they do not have to turn at the same speed....there is some slippage between them. When you move the glove box mounted vacuum switch to the emergency mode, this basically locks the front and rear axles, resulting in a more aggressive 4WD. The QuadraTrac Transfer Case has what has been referred to as a mini differential inside. In normal mode, this diff slips, in emergency mode, its locked in. Hope this helps, Rick :chug: Try this link....its here in the forum and provided by BusaDave I think. http://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f105/transfer-cases-12108/

It's a lot like a locking differential. Unlocked (normal mode) power is divided as needed between the front and rear axles. Locked (emergency mode) power is divided equally between the front and rear axles. This does not however control the powere between wheels on each axle, that would require a locking differential of some type. It was the first attempt at full time 4 wheel drive. You will also find a gear reduction unit usually attached to these. This only reduces the gear ratio before the power goes to each axle. Have we totally confused you now? Rod

The net result of this set up is no different than what's in my Ford Expedition. I have AWD / 4H / 4L. Works the same way with a QuadraTrac . These got a little bit of a bad name for one basic reason, very few people knew how to use them correctly at the time they came out. And even yet today people over complicate their usage. It's silly really. If you can operate one of today's four wheel drives you can operate a QuadraTrac . The only mechanical shortcoming they had was the chain drive. The system works great so long as you keep the right fluid in there and make sure that chain stays tight and replace it with gets too loose. The other mechanical problems come from people just not using it correctly or trying to bastardize the system.

Quality parts for the most part have dried up as Borg-Warner no longer supports them; Crown seems to be the only source.
