thinking about a cj7 350 but have some problems with buying it
Hey all I am thinking of buying a CJ7 it would be my third. I sold the other 2 off so there is any empty spot for a new toy. I found this guy a dealer actually who bought this jeep 2 years back for a "toy" Jeep is 350ed out and has a 4 inch lift on it, not to crazy on the lift just the way I like it.
Heres the problem i need some help with.
He bought the jeep and had it shipped, he has personally put "2 miles" on it. He didnt let me drive it yet, but explained a problem that it has. The steering alignment is out of wack a bit. The fron tires you can see are tilted outwards a tad. When it goes down the road it "drifts" and is a bit out of control. Like i said he is a dealer with some high end new cars and used around his lot. SO he says he has had a few guys look at it and they cant figure it out.

The 3 adjustments that I see are all maxed out there is a suspension alignment shock under there and 2 (maybe 3) rods that have NO threads left to tighten up the alignment any more. Basically if you could tighen it up a bit more it would be close enough to get it on an alignment machine but as it stands its not close enough.

The guy has loads of money. He says he lost love for the project because of his bikes and boats ( all around the shop) so he wants to free up the space in the shop and let it go. He says a JEEP guy is what I need or an Old school alignment guy and he will figure it out. Anyone out there have any suggestions? I will include the only pic of the front end that I have. Any help or pointers or JEEP guys in the NY (11561) area please say hello if you are looking for a days work. Thx Tim

Okay, so you need to adjust the toe in. Problem is the tie rod is adjusted in as far as possible.
I wonder if all the parts match up. Your '83 CJ should have a wide track axle. Measure to make sure. The wide track axle should be 56 inches wheel to wheel. Narrow track should be 53 inches.
If you have a narrow track axle and a tie rod for a wide track you would have this problem.

Edit: Are my numbers correct or is the narrow track 51.5 inches wide?
