Just purchased my first Jeep, a 1982 scrambler CJ8 . I noticed the driver side rear wheel is not exactly centered in the wheel well while the passenger one is. Any recommendations on where to start first in diagnosing. Thanks

Check where the axle and the leaf spring go together. There is a pin in the top side of the leaf spring the goes into the axle mounting pad, that pin could be sheared. Check along the axle tubes for any signs of bending. Research online for checking a bent axle. Model 20 axle tubes are pretty thin and prone to bending. It can also damage axle seals. My Dana 44 rear axle is bent, but I just deal with it.

I have seen the center section crack where the axle tube is pressed in so that is another spot you could check

If everything is good with the axle check to see if the rims are the same off-set.
it’s a long shot but let’s hope for an easy fix!

Looking for the front side of the axle to the space between the springs and axle tube, I can see a round pin. It is in the springs on both sides but does not go up into the axle. Are the pins part of the spring, so I need new springs?

Centered? How so? Front to back or side to side.
PLZ-fill out your vehicle info.

Can you post a picture?
Starting to sound like a broken axle center pin.
I would NOT drive it till fixed!
This is the 'pin'(bolt)in question.

Make sure the springs are orientated correctly. Measure from eye to eye, and from front eye to centering pins and compare. Also check actual frame measurments and see if good. Maybe the body has been loosened or slid slightly. or it's out of square.

It would help diagnose if we could see it or knew how far (little out of alignment) was.

JR-On the '82 CJ, there's only 1 way to mount the springs due to the large OD of the hanger bushing.
Then again-Never ASSume what a PO didn't do......

Lumpy - My '75 springs can be mounted either way. Why do I know? When I was mounting my springs I researched which end, the front or the back the spring clamps or retainers or what ever they are called needed to go. The springs had the same size eye front or back. .... But there are only a very few ways the axle could be crooked. The spring center pin is broken or missing. The springs are uneven, possibly different from side to side. The body is crooked on the frame. The bushings are completely warn out. The spring shackles are of uneven lengths. The spring attachment point is seriously misplaced. The frame is very bent. It's a simple system, most problems would be obvious to the naked eye.

Oops - yes you're probably right on that year. Like Hedge suggests - I found out the hard way with mine, but that was while upgrading to the OME YJ springs...
