On my 84 CJ7 the tilt steering column has a lot of play at the tilt joint. Also my ignition switch just broke so I am currenty starting with a toggle switch with wires going directly to starter solenoid. Basicly the ignition is always on so I am having to disconnect battery when not in use. Anyways I am thinking about just replaceing the entire steering column assembly and wanted suggestions on doing so and where I could find one that would pretty much use the existing wiring connections, etc.

Please Help:notworthy:

Thanks all

The switch is an easy fix. You can get the new key cylinder for very cheap, and a google search will bring up directions with piks for your year. The tilt joint is more involved, and you will need to pull the entire column to do a full rebuild. Again, directions are available with piks If you do a quick search.

Thanks Coldwater, your right looks like I can pick up a cylinder for about $20 so will go that route. Tried doing a search on tighten up the steer column, but didn't get much.

Thanks

That's a good link that Pete provided. Good idea to take your own pics as you go through disassembly, unless you've got a real good memory. Mine was super sloppy - the bearing was shot - and now it's fine. Whole lot easier than replacing the whole column.

Great write up Pete! VERY HELPFUL. Well found my problem, broken "rack" as refered to below. Any ideas to get one?

Remember this part? Was mentioned earlier as something that will fall out, let's call it the rack. Notice the small lip inside the hole in the rack, toward the top of the picture. That lip must catch the pin of the ignition switch actuator rod (see arrow).

You can get the part in a package from GM Parts Direct: Your direct source for Genuine GM Parts
Part # is 7844651
Rack Kit
Includes the bearings and rack , about $35

Might find it at a local GM dealer, but may be special order. It's put together to replace broken parts after an attempted hijack.
