I’m installing a new fuel return line on my 79 CJ5 (AMC 304 ). The PO didn’t have one and has a fuel filter without the return line outlet. The fuel tank has two vents next to each other with one of the vents plugged. I’d like to run the return fuel line to the vent that’s currently plugged. The reason is that I’d really not have to lower the tank and run the return on top of the tank.

I’m running the return line because I suspect that I’m having some vapor lock issues. The other vent line is connected to a Roll Over Valve.

Any issues with running the return to one of the vents? Thanks in advance for the help!

If it is plugged it probably is not a vent but where the return line went.

Those two vent tubes on the side of the fuel tank attach to venting tubes on each side inside the fuel tank. This can help with venting in off camber situations. The two tubes connect the liquid check valve which is connected to the rollover check valve. A repair manual will show the fuel tank vent system in its entirety. Your vapor lock issues could be due to the lack of fuel tank venting. A test for fuel tank venting would be to remove the gas cap after a short drive. As the fuel exits the tank while driving a vacuum is created if there is not enough venting.
