Hi Guys, Thanks for all the great advice coming in on the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine rebuild.

I'm considering when the engine and drive train are pulled, maybe doing a Painless Wiring kit. Anyone have any experience with them? It seems they are the way to go, if you're considering cleaning up your wiring mess on a 45yr old CJ, from what I've read so far.

I have used Painless kits and they are well made .
Since your CJ is a 79.there are two kits available.

1) Jeep CJ that you can customize.
2) Jeep CJ direct replacement.

If you do not mind the work, the CJ universal is around half the cost of the direct fit.

If you opt for the direct replacement, any.electrical work that has been done on your CJ that is not factory will need to be incorporated.
