I recently took the body off my 1956 Dispatcher and I thought I could pull just the column out by taking the top cover off and pulling the bearings and worm gear out.... Apparently that wasn't the case.... I ended up just unbolting the box from the frame and pulling it up from there. But how do I get the worm gear and bearings back in the box? I've tried just about anything and they don't slip up in. I may try and thread the bolts back in the box and bracket and see if I can pull it back together by that.. If there's a correct way, please let me know! I really don't want to mess up the original steering box.

The current issue of JP magazine has an excellent article on rebuilding the Ross steering system. Sold on news stands and magazine racks everywhere.

The only way to get the worm gear back into the box is to take the box apart. It's hard to believe you just pulled it out of the box to begin with. The pivets on the sector shaft intersect with the worm gear.
