So I'm in the middle of doing the summer repairs and can't seem to find any reference on the steering gear. I know it is a saginaw since it has the raised S and know it is a long shaft. I had a nasty leak that ate away at the swaybar bushing and started to replace the input and ouput seals and now see it leaking from the what I would call the piston cover?? Anyways I am going to rebuild it but can't seem to find out what model it is. It has 9L as a casting as well as 5691676 by the cover and has 4.25 turns.

Any part number that is CAST into the iron housing or CAST into the aluminum side cover, is exactly that -- the casting number. It will not help you in any way to find your particular steering gear. Starting around 1969 Saginaw started ink stamping a two letter code on the side cover and/or the aluminum end plug. The two letter code was used at the GM assembly plants to keep different part number gears separate. (It was much easier to glance at a two letter alpha code than a 8 digit part number.)

Unfortunately, the ink stamp numbers were never considered to be a thirty year identification. The only other way to try and determine the vintage of a gear is to measure the pitman shaft travel.

I really doubt that a gear assembly part number would be of much http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=29424#value. If you have some kind of reference books where it could help, let me know.

I think the 9L is what you need to search for...

but my Limited search came up with nadda for it so far...
