My 80 CJ7 has a AMC 304 in it and I am trying to find any identification on it since it was not the same motor that was in it when it was bought new can anyone give some type of direction into where to look for it.:bang:

On the AMC V8's the motor number is stamped on a tag that is rivited to the valve cover. I know, "they did what?". If the covers are gone, if the tag is gone, if the covers are not the originals? your screwed.:( In large cast numbers over the drivers side motor mount will be the engine size but that is all.

Actually thats not quite correct....
There is a cast in number behind the left side head, above the bellhousing. As to where to decode it, here is one site...

Also, the displacement is cast into the block under each side's motor mount. My Jeep was bought with what I was told was a AMC 304 , but somehow after i bought it, it grew into a 360! :)

was there any doubt? The casting number came as a surprise to me. I think who ever thought up the tag was not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Probably the bosses son, and to cover his arse the boss had it cast int eh back where to dork couldn't see it, LOL.
