New guy here, I bought a '79 CJ7 last week. I've been going through threads and stickys since I got it. I'm just trying to decide to either keep the inline 6 or I have a GM 6.0 laying around that I could rebuild. I just looked and found out that it's a quadramatic, so my reading says that a GM Turbo 400 should be underneath it. If this is the case, can't I basically connect the 6.0 to it with new motor mounts? I'm trying to eliminate all the costly mistakes I made with my '55 Ford p/u build, thanks in advance. I'll be on here a lot with a lot of questions, L8R ZFLASH https://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/images/smilies/beerchug.gif

No it won't just bolt right in. While it is basically a GM Transmission the bell housing bolt pattern is AMC specific. You can bolt in any AMC from a AMC 304 -401 but nothing else without an adapter.

Thank you, I was thinking about a adapter. I might keep the 6 in it and just enjoy it, this is just a rain (flooding in Houston) vehichle. Looking forward to this forum, I live on the vette and ford truck forums. L8R ZFLASH

As much rain as we have been getting down in the gulf coast areas the last few years you might want to consider some type of flat boat or airboat or maybe a ford Bigfoot truck :)

?...I might keep the 6 in it and just enjoy it......

Greetings from Va -

The AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 's Jeep used are great little engines..... freshened up you won't be disappointed. And for some of us, CJ's just oughta be AMC powered. And you will have the added benefit of not worrying about adapters, linkage issues, wiring, etc..... One option there you should consider is swapping a 4.0 head and intake - a fairly common mod.

Any way you go, you're gonna enjoy your new toy!!

I'm liking your thoughts, while I'm freshing it up, should I do a cam swap too? Thanks, L8R ZFLASH

I think you mean it has a QuadraTrac Transfer Case ? If so then stock would have been an AMC housed GM Turbo 400 , which also means it most likely came with a AMC 304 .

That said be sure of the 6cyl you have before you go buying parts as PO may have done a head swap and maybe even the crank swap.

Not likely someone swapped IN a QuadraTrac so I’m using its existence as a baseline.

Thank you for your help and comments,I'm still waiting to pick it up. I'm having them put a new soft top and Bimini top on too, also fix the heater and fuel gauge. I'm really just going by what the sales person told me about the Transfer Case and engine. He's a jeep person too, so I hope I'm not getting burned.I do know that it is a staight 6 in it, I didn't crawl underneth to look at it. Hopefully, I'll have it in my hands this week. Looking forward to all y'alls advice and help. L8R ZFLASH

No worries. We are here to help....

You'd be well served to leave that I6 in there, as long as it is what it came with and not some cobbled up swap the PO did.
These AMC I6 engines are fine little specimens.
Good luck with your new besty.

Keep the I-6 in it!
I love mine.

Still going strong at 275,000km.
Freshened up with a rebuild, bored 30 over, split headers, dual pipes, Offy intake, and a 4 barrel.

Has a great growl to it.
Tons of fun.

Smiles per mile not miles per gallon.....
