I have a 73 CJ5 . I'm wanting to replace my current shackles with more appropriate. The ones currently on it are lift shackles and they look incredibly to long and unsafe. I'm wanting to know of a good brand and more factory length shackle to go with. Also will shackles for a 76 and up fit with my leafs or do I need some specific to my intermediate. Thanks

I looked at several brands, trying to replicate my ConFerr brand (out of buss.) shackles for their quality. I decided that Warrior Products brand was as close as I could find. They have 3/8" sides, a must if you ask me, plus they have a welded center block and not just a bolt that still allows them to rack out of line.
There is a limit to the length of shackles to run safely and probably why most manf. limit lifts to 2" offerings. I'm not sure but I don't think your year had a sway bar of any type so that even more reason to stay close to stock length. And being longer really starts to put stress on the mounts. Even with the stock shackles in later years (3" b2b) the factory mounts are trouble prone. Now I can't speak to your year of Jeep but if the mounts are like the 80's era then you may want to at least examine them for twist, or replace with a better aftermarket type.

Heres a thread that may help gain some insight for your year.

Make'em I did mine. Was more difficult than expected, well sorta.

I had an old very long set that came on my CJ. The stock shackles worked but drew comments about being skinny or weak. Troubles came in trying to drill all the holes exactly the same. I have a drill press, but was surprised to see how much the bit wandered in the thick metal. I ended up cutting them to pieces. After cleaning everything up and new drills were bought, new straight holes were drilled. I used a set of old bushings for measurement, learned to add a thick washer for extra clearance. A long hard lesson here so listen. Then Spring end and top mount need different amounts of clearance. In the void space between I welded in a squashed, to make it oval, section of pipe. Sounds easy enough. Not only are the measurements tricky, new sharp drills are a must, the front isn't the same as the back especially since I was trying to keep the shackles as short and tight as possible. I'm usually fairly good at this sort of thing. This job was started and restarted, tossed across the shop, stopped completely a couple times. Once the front was done I had to gather myself back together a couple times before tackling the rear. ..... I really like the final results and nobody will call my tank like spring shackles small or weak again.

I run a 4.5" center to center shackle which provides about 3/4" of lift. They work well and I haven't had any issues. I made my first set now I have a greasable set in the front. I wouldn't go any more than 5" center to center just based on gut feel and what I think looks about right from a balance and leverage standpoint.

If you don't want to spend big money, stock YJ shackles are an inch longer eye to eye than CJ shackles and are way better designed strength-wise.

I've been running these for years and they are a good upgrade without breaking the bank.

Jim did you convert to YJ springs up front?

No, I just used the shackles. They don't have a center reinforcement so leaf width doesn't matter.

The CJ world is a sadder place, since they went out of business. Dang I wish I'd bought their truss.

Hack-I could not agree more.
They were also great folks to work with and really supported the 'off-road' world.
I have a set of their extended shackles on my CJ that have been there for over 30 years.

Thank you all for the comments. I know my local junk yards get lucky with yj so I guess Ill keep a look out for a good set on there. The current shackles I have aren't my favorite but will work until I can get to that step. I had a set back with my motor, which led to a new crank and main and rod bearings but Ill get back to my suspension soon enough.
