Was looking to switch shocks. Currently running a Trail Master 4" lift. Looking at different shock setup. Trail/ street use. Trailer towing also. What do others run and why?

I have used/ridden in CJs with Ranchos, Skyjackers, Pro comps, Doetsch, and parts store shocks (unsure of brand). Most of these have been with 4" lifts and/or stock springs SOA.

The Rancho 5000s and Pro comps seemed the harshest to me. Been a while since I rode on the skyjackers, but they seemed about the same from what I can remember. The cheap shocks from the parts store rode softer than the lift kit brand ones. I'm not sure if they were a house brand, Monroe, or what, but they were on the self, in stock, and had a yellow body. I've also been very pleased with the Doetsch DT3000s with my SOA. Much softer ride than the Rancho 5000s they replaced. Although, I would have gone with the basic Monroe (or similiar) from a parts store if I could have found the length I needed.

Get the softest valved you can.
Monroe has worked well for me.

How a out the bilstein shocks? I have never ran any on any vehicle, but they seem to have a popular following. My brorher had bilsteins on his Z71 chevy truck. They lasted a loooong time.

What do the Fox shocks offer over others besides the name? I know they are $$$$ also. Don't mind paying a little as long as they are good shock.

'Billys' are stiff.
Remember-We run leaf springs, not coils.

I run the Rancho 9000s and leave them on the softest setting as they are adjustable. On my CJ I have had a problem with the lower rear axle shock mounts getting banged up in the rocks, even breaking shocks. It was resolved by moving the rear shock mounts on the rear axle housing and using a shorter Rancho 9000.

Got that LG.

Torx, what type of bracket did you use? I'm sure you fabricated it yourself, just having trouble picturing it.

:agree:

Pictures would be mo-better.............:poke:

Do the WT rears not have the shock mounts on the axle like the fronts? Never really paid much attention.

Anyway, my rear shocks on the the OEM Bronco 9" mounts (I may have moved them, I don't remember), but places like ruffstuff and barnes4x4 have a good selection of tabs/brackets. I used to try to make all of my own, but now I typically buy stuff like that because it saves me a lot of time and I usually get a better looking product too.

On the WT CJ's(front & rear)the bottom shock mount is on the spring pack, u-bolt plate.

I was thinking that for the fronts, the shock mounts were on the tube. I swear I thought I remembered having to cut the bracket off of a WT when swapping it under a CJ5 . Maybe I'm thinking about something else, or maybe it wasn't stock, IDK. Anyway, not the first time I've been wrong. Thanks
