Rebuild of my CJ7 Renegade . Went to put on my new shocks and they are way to short. They were for 0-1 inch lift from Quadratec. All four are the same with max length of just about 19 inches. The front length from the pin (on the axle) to the upper mount is just over 20. The rear length from the tie plate to upper mount is just over 22. It appears as though it is lifted 2-3 inches. The replacement springs were stock and the shackles are 3/4 inch lifted.

Am I missing something? Can I just get by with some skyjacker shocks that are long enough to reach?

What year CJ7 ? Are the front shock towers short and welded on or tall and bolted on? Front bottom mount on axle tube or u bolt plate?

I would check with Quadratec and make sure you received the right ones.

You can? But I wouldn't go with skyjackers. I would get a basic shock from the parts (something like a cheap Monroe, will be softer). I'm running Doetsch DT3000s and they ride pretty good too.

It is an 84. Tall bolted upper mounts and lower mounts bolt to the axle.

No engine, Transmission , fuel tank, or even the body.

I could see that with the engine weight the front shock fully extended will reach but the rear one is 3 inches short. The Quadratec sight has 2 rear shocks listed as 0-1 inch and had different lengths. I think this may be the problem. I had talked to a rep before ordering and they said just follow the table in their catalog. This referenced the shorter shock for front and back

Can you check your old shocks length?

I think I too would just get something local, and spend as little as you can. These Jeeps take the same shocks as many half ton pickups and the shocks are valved accordingly making them pretty stout for a CJ. I've found that getting them as cheap as you can gives a better ride.

The other side of that coin is paying top-dollar from an outfit that makes shocks "for" Jeeps (Rocky Road comes to mind).

So these do fit on the front so I will only have to get different rear shocks. Note the left bracket on the axle is bent a little and I will have to widen it a bit

I would wait on shocks until the body and drivetrain are installed and it's a ride height. It would suck to order longer shocks, only to find out they are too long once weight is on the springs.

:agree:
You can drive it without shocks for a spell, to let the springs settle some.

I did that once after my soa swap. Drove across town to my dad's house to weld on new shock mounts...hit 1 bump and felt like the springs bounced for 3 miles. lol

It’s not going to matter, if the axle can still drop beyond the max shock length. Need shocks short enough for full stuff and long enough for full droop.

Same thing (sorta) happened to me. Replaced stock leafs and ridiculous 8” shackles PO had installed with 2.5” lift springs and .5” shackles. Shocks wouldn’t go back on even at full extension. Looks the same height but obviously something changed. Been cruising with no shocks for a couple of weeks.
