1986 CJ7 , trying to figure what shocks I need. I measured the rear shocks and have 19.5" between top and bottom eye. I measured the front and got 17.5". This jeep looks to be lifted but I don't know the amount.
I have read there are sites where you can give the measurements I took and it will point out the correct shocks?
Are these measurements within what one would call normal for a CJ7 ?
There are two pics from the side to show how she sits.

If you really want to be accurate measure for yourself. Remove the shocks and drive into a ditch so you compress the opposite tires. Then measure how long the shocks would be if installed. On the 2 tires that are compressed see if you are pressed against the bump stops. If you think you have more travel take that into account. This is how I bought my shocks.

It is possible that the minimum length is so short that the shock wont extend to the maximum length that you would like. To really get the most travel you can raise the top shock mount. I common mod is to install a shock mount intended for a Ford truck.

Some people will bolt this to the frame. I cut the bottom of the ford mount and welded it on my frame. All this may be more that you were planning on doing but that's how I got the maximum wheel travel.
If you don't want to change the shock mounts at least measure for yourself how long the shocks should be.

Once you find the specs you need. Get the 'softest' shock you can find.
