I just finished installing some new leaf springs a on my 79 CJ7 . Now looking at shocks. I guess my question is what is the best kind of shocks (for the money) that I should get? The rancho 9000 seem to be the popular choice. I have a spring over axle lift if that is a difference maker.
1977 CJ 7; Amc 401 .30 over, Howell TBI, modified Dana 20 with Terra Low gears and twin sticks, NV 4500 5-speed, modified Dana 30 and Amc 20 both with 4.56 gears (narrow track), ARB air lockers front and rear, SSBC rear disc brake conversion, MICO Brake park brake, Navaho brake booster/ master cylinder, PowerTank CO2 tank.
Rancho shocks are good. You'll have to do some measuring for collapsed length and extended length. And have you ride height some were about in the middle. From mounting point to mounting point will be your ride height length.
1979 Jeep CJ5 with 304 V8, T18 Transmission, Dana 20 Transfer case with TeraLow 3:1 gears, 4.88 axle gears, Detroit Locker up front and Ox Locker in back with 1 piece axle shafts, 36" SuperSwamper SX Tires, Shackle reversal, MileMarker Hydraulic winch, MSD 6A ignition.
Drive your Jeep into a ditch so opposite corners are compressed like this:
Then you have 2 shocks that are at maximum extension and 2 that are at maximum compression. Then with that information go to this site and look for a Rancho part number that will work for the front and another set for the rear. Rancho RS9000 Shock Specifications
