Hiya,

Anyone have any experience using these side steps on a '75ish CJ5 ?

Amazon.com: Rugged Ridge 12025.34 Black Side Step Kit - Pair: Automotive

some of the compatibility charts only show this as working up to '71. it looks like they should work - even if we had to fabricate a little.

Also, if you have them - are they sturdy? I like the look of these better than the other tube steps that I've seen (more military-ish fits our look better). Any other side step opinions welcome.

DO you 4wheel your jeep? If you do those will get you hung up on everything. If you 4wheel it I think you should check into the rock sliders that have a step built in. That way you get your step and protection for your rockers.

they do an excellent job of finding those obstacles you would ordinarily roll right over.

Is it you , him or both of you that is having a problem climbing in??

for him I would suggest "Cowboy up son", for you I recommend a milk crate on a string. use it for a step and pull it in behind you. Please believe me when I say that this is perfectly acceptable behavior for a lady in a Jeep.

Of course the rock rails are the first choice.

I agree with about. Get rock sliders that attach to the frame not the tub

Save you some headache later

Also when running with the doors & top off, the windshield down. it is some place to put your left foot to catch more air on a hot day........and it is way cool :chug:

Thanks for the replies! Somehow the notifications got buried in my junk folder so I just saw them all.

Both he and I are about 6 ft tall and built "sturdy" and with the shape of the doors and the custom roll cage that's in it (thicker than stock), we both have trouble. The milk crate is a funny suggestion - would take up too much room in the rig though.

We are taking it for a little bit of Off Road this weekend but I don't think we will be doing full on rock crawling in it - but that is a good thing to keep in mind, so thanks for that. Maybe I'll look into the rails instead.

meep meep!

Listen it is really simple, all the "Hard Core" Jeepers will say that you will get hung up on these and rip them off and it is true. I have them and use them for getting my shorter than me family into the Jeep as they were intended to do. So if you require them then install them, that simple and if they get ripped off by a rock or a stump then lesson learned.:D

If you get the CARR side steps like what came on my Jeep, do like I did...Modify them to be able to fold up or down as you need them. I just had to take one of the bolts out of the mounting bracket to be able to fold them up against the body where they didn't get caught on everything. Worked good until the wife (riding shotgun) forgot to lift hers up after getting in. Ripped it off on a big rock on the side of a ditch...lol

I have waited so long to be called a "hard core Jeeper", but now I feel ashamed of myself.:o

the big guys right maybe this is the perfect move for you and the worst you could do is break something. :D

Go have fun with your new toy and don't pay too much attention to the "hard core" that always seem to be working on the Jeep rather than driving the Jeep.:laugh:
