Hello All, New Member and just bought my 84' CJ7 today. One of my first concerns is the amount of play in the steering. Any suggestions on how to tighten it up. Also the steering colum itself moves around. Any ideas.

Thanks:chug:

Welcome, Beking
this is a subject covered many many times before, If you were to scroll through the threads in this forum you will find quite a few suggestions.
And if you want a good answer about your jeep, tell us everything you have done so far to check on it, and what you have found.
If you have not much mechanical skills and do not know where to start, just ask and we will get you started. We need top know lift amt and if it is running big tires.
First thing to check would be the steering stablizer to see if the shock is good, next check all the joints for wear.

PLUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this needs to be in the steering section, not the drivetrain section

Hello beking and welcome to our site! :chug:

The steering box can be 'slightly tweaked but that is usually not the problem with them. If there is play in the box it should be replaced as adjusting the shaft tension screw really does not really take out play as many think it does...

Here is a great article on rebuilding a saginaw box if you are inclined to try it or need it... :)

Make sure all steering connections are tight, no loose nuts, etc.
Check for worn bushings, bearing, etc.
Grab the linkages and see if you can wiggle them by hand.
I replaced all my steering linkage bushings, etc with poly and rubber and it tightened right up. Also replaced my wheel bearings.

As for your column being loose, check the bolts that hold it in place under the dash, etc.
