Smog

How do I remove the smog on my 1981cj

Im going to answer this by telling you what you need, not what you dont need :D

The ignition control module on the drivers side fender needs to stay. Softlines can all go except the two lines from the top of the valve cover (PCV and CCV) those just need a sigle line, rear PCV to manifold vacuum, and front CCV to the air cleaner box... and the vacuum advance from the carb to the distributor.

And that's all there is :chug:

Keep in mind, the Carter bbd is dependant on the smog equipment to perform correctly, a carb replacement is probably in your future.

I appreciate your advice, That was what is was hoping to be able to do, but was afraid to start tearing that junk off and having to put it back. Thanks

You don't necessarily have to get a new carb. Do a Nutter Bypass and you can still use your Carter carb.

I have a 1981 CJ5 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine with serpentean belt, my smog pump had started screaming and i have removed it however would like to know if there is a drop in idler pulley I can buy to fill in that space? Thanks in advance

Not really sure, the later CJs w/AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , did eliminate the smog pump due to computer controls. There is an idler pulley installed in its place though. A Jeep salvage outfit like J&W Jeep - J&W Auto Wreckers - New & Used Jeep Parts would have one. Smog pumps aren't all that bad as they blow air into the combustion chambers.

OP-Why do you want to do this?
Way the SMOG laws are changing-Might not be the best idea.
I've played the SMOG game with my CJ, since I bought it new in '85.

Thank you, I will give that a try. I live on the most southern tip of the Baja peninsula california sur Mexico and have Limited supply of parts unless I order them from the states at a very high cost so I am trying to make the best with what I have. thank you again.
